Hailee Steinfeld is actually of mixed race. White/Black/Filipino.

Way to make my point again for me without even realizing. Ironic.

I said Hailee Steinfeld is *not white*. That does not mean the same thing as *not caucasian.* They are not synonyms. Arabs, Latinas, and many other ethnic groups in addition to western Europeans are all caucasian, but they are not all considered white in America.

Though in either case, Hailee Steinfeld is neither white nor caucasian, as she is multi-ethnic, and only part of that background is caucasian. And therein lies another big problem with all this bitching: people who act like they can "tell by looking."

So because Steinfeld, someone who could reasonably 'code' as white to a lot of people, was considered for the role, the casting wasn't racist. Right.
