I actually really love dubs, and with anime it kind of depends. If it's supposed to be set in an English speaking country, an English dub works better for my personal preferences (like, I think the original Baccano! is good, but the English dub of Baccano! is what sells it to me). If it's set in Japan then a Japanese dub makes more logical sense. Anywhere else and it's kind of a crapshoot - I mean, I don't hunt down a Chinese dub if an anime is set in China, and as I only speak English I pretty much choose between English dub or Japanese sub, but yeah.

Also, some of it's just personal preference. I love the English dub of slayers and the English dub of pokemon, even though they aren't all that great: for me, the stupid humor works better in English. Same way I prefer Ouran in Japanese and ... idk. I think there are lots of totally legitimate reasons to like a dub over a sub.

As for the names, well, I agree with you there.
