You know, I get that you're upset that you don't have a role model here who is like you. However...the author herself has said that she didn't necessarily intend for Katniss to be mixed race. So really, you should never have pinned your hopes on her in the first place.

The author also said though that, as this is the future, there's been a lot of mixing, very strongly implying that it would make the most sense for Katniss to indeed be mixed race (as opposed to white), even if she didn't explicitly intend her as being such.

"Makes sense" and "is" are two different things. In the context of the story it makes sense for Katniss to be mixed race, just as it makes sense for Katniss to be white. One's not more correct than the other, especially given that Collins did not intentionally write her as mixed race.

The "future!" argument swings both ways given that it's a future with strict geographic isolation and this is Appalachia, hardly the most racially diverse part of America, and there's color segregation in District 12 (and apparently only two colors).

I don't know if you're trying to say that the location lends more credence to the "Katniss is white" argument. (e.g. "It's Appalachia, so duh of course Katniss is most likely white," as I've heard numerous people say.) But if so, there are the Melungeons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melungeon) to take into consideration. That seems to be the closest to Katniss' model than anything else.

Which is EXACTLY the point. Saying Katniss is white is no more correct than saying she's of mixed race, and THEREFORE when the casting directors of the movie only asked for Caucasian girls to show up to audition for the role, THAT can be considered racist.

Is anyone on this thread even arguing that the casting call was fucked up? No. The issue begins when people say "Katniss -should- have been a POC!" Like in this secret. She could have been a POC or she could have been white. Just because the OP imagined her as a POC doesn't mean that she is one.

You make an excellent point. I apologize if I conveyed the thought that Katniss SHOULD have been cast as someone of mixed race, because that's not what I'm saying. What I'm trying to say (though probably poorly-- sorry for the confusion) is that people who think Katniss is a POC are not DELUSIONAL. We aren't grasping at straws. It's entirely possible for Katniss to be mixed, just as it is entirely possible for her to be white. It's when people immediately say "Oh, no. She wasn't mixed, she was a tan Caucasian," that's when my feathers get ruffled.
