(Anonymous) 2011-06-03 03:01 am (UTC)(link)There's a lot about this whole casting thing that's fucked up. That the casting was restricted only to Caucasian girls? Dick move. Huge, huge, huge dick move. That there needs to be face paint involved to ~replicate Katniss' actual look? Even bigger dick move. It doesn't surprise me that many have compared it to blackface.
However, I think a lot of this debate is projection. Katniss' race was never explicitly mentioned in the text. We can make inferences from the way her skin is described, but saying that she should be this race or that is erroneous, and honestly kind of reductive (since people of many races and ethnicities are capable of displaying similar shades of skintone). I understand the desire, but none of us is the author. We simply can't make that call.
In an ideal world, there would be as equal a chance for a Latina or a mixed-race gal to land the role of Katniss as for a (not painted, ffs!) Caucasian girl, and all options would be, at least, plausible*. Unfortunately, these are all hypothetical conditions, since, as I already stated, owing to dick moves by the producers, we end up with a white girl with a spray tan. And that shouldn't be considered acceptable.
*I do, however, understand why the latter would produce more chagrin than the former, since it would just be contributing to the glut of movies with white leading ladies. But that's a whole other dimension to the debate that I'm not quite up to tonight.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-03 04:17 am (UTC)(link)In my head, Katniss looks one way - which is more Greek/Southern Italian than she looks Latina (even though I, personally, am Latina). In the head of the OP, she looks more Latina. In the head of someone else, she might look more Northern African. Someone else might see her as part Chinese. And another group of people are going to see her as more white.
Whoever designed that casting call was going by an interpretation that Katniss is more white. That doesn't make it wrong, and it doesn't make it right, and as Katniss' race isn't specified, it doesn't really make it a racist interpretation.
I would have preferred if Katniss was played by Hailee, because I think she looked more like Katniss. A huge part of the fandom wanted Kaya Scoladero. Another part wanted Malese Jow. (Although honestly I would have liked, if she were younger, someone like Stephanie Leonidas, who is Cypriot Descent, although I think that people would call her white.)
But at the end of the day? Most stuff in that book is open to interpretation, and frankly the casting director and Gary are both exercising that by casting Cinna, who is a massive role, as a non-white character. As the series progresses, we might get more people who aren't white (I would love Finnick Odair to be played by Jesse Williams or, even though he's too old, someone like Gael Garcia Bernal.)
