I LOLed at the "sympathy" paragraph because the exact same thing was done to one of my favorite characters, Sylar. He was evil incarnate, he was creepy as hell, but he made a great villain because he was smart and knew how to get under people's skin. The first time he was given mommy issues provided enough insight into the character without providing it as complete redemption - in the same ep he went back to his murderous ways - but then TPTB expounded on even more family issues and gave a half-assed explanation to absolve him of everything, to get us to believe he wasn't at fault and never wanted to kill anyone.

tldr: haven't seen the movie, but I totally get that frustration with having the villain's evil actions being explained away.
