um... not really

it's like telling a little girl that she shouldn't dream of being a princess because that'd mean she supports slavery and oppressing peasants
and also nobility weren't the same in all countries

I'm sorry if my post is incomprehensible. English is not my first language

Okay, so got it. So I should day dream about being a little pilgrim (what other heinous idolization of a conquistadors is there?), and ignore all the awful things that entails. THAT would be okay.

I'm sorry, but you have to understand some of our ancestors were on the other end-- I'm definitely part African, so it means that my conquistador ancestors were probably abusing and enslaving my African ancestors... it's really hard to feel wistful about that. It's not unlikely I'm descended from a rapist and his victim. Which is really depressing to think about.

Your post is fine and definitely understandable. I know I'm being kinda harsh, but like I said, my own "noble" ancestry is ugly and bloody and not something to be proud of.

I understand the point and I can't deny that there were probably assholes in my family, but from what I learned abou my ancestors, they were mostly boring acre owners who didn't want to get too involved into politics, so they weren't known for any battles or conquered lands or converted pagans

like I said - not all nobles are the same
and than you for understanding :)

No problem. :) At first I was incredibly angry and then I stepped back and went "why am I so angry?" and I realized that I'm kinda jealous that I don't really have anything to be proud of in the heritage department. Or if I do, it's overwhelmed by the ugly. And then there's the implication-- which I understand that you weren't trying to make but is often the case particularly in American discussions of heritage (how ethnocentric of me!) that we're defined by our ancestors and while that's something you shouldn't have a problem with it, after what I explained, you can probably see why it's more of a problem for someone like me. :)

I'm sorry I was harsh, again. You should be proud of your family, but at the same time, you should be proud of yourself, so your descendants have something to look back on and smile. :D

Oh lord, please don't be. Look, you weren't entirely descended from oppressors, how is that bad? LOL. The part of your family that survived that enslavement, that's pretty awesome. If, in fact, you are descended from a rapist and his victim, surely that means she raised the child of that union and mined something good from the abuse. If that's the case, doesn't it mean you're here as a testament to your family's strength in the face of abuse? Be proud of that, at least!

Wait, you're Polish? *facepalm* Weird coincidence, my family is common-as-dirt Polish on the OTHER side...

Okay, OP. I admit it's rare for me to back down, but in this case; I was wrong. It's true, I assumed you were talking about a Western European background, based on the wording of your secret.

If you're Polish, regardless of whether you have a background of nobility or not, I think you are in a position to be proud of your family for surviving everything Poland has been through.

Hell, people only seem to have stopped telling "Polish jokes" in America in the past few years.

To be honest, I kind of think we should be telling little girls this.

Yes, me too. How about 'Disney presidents' instead of 'Disney princessess'?

I'm sick and tired of royalty being romanticized.
