I don't agree that no one should have babies because it's a horrible world etc., because especially as someone said, that's pretty much always true.

but I do kinda understand the frustration. I'd like to see more female characters who don't want to settle down and/or have kids and stay true to that throughout the plot/series. it seems like even a majority of lesbian characters in movies&tv are settling down and having babies (it makes us safer I guess-- don't worry we're still doing proper lady things like having babies!). I would just like some more who don't like/want kids (or marriage) ever and are fine with that and it's treated totally normal?

you could argue that it's a progressive stance, considering how often gay adoptions are challenged or outright banned and the hassles gay parents go through. that would be my first thought, anyway. idk.

it's progressive if it's balanced, I agree. but it seems like we're past the point of "some gay people have kids and are awesome parents, too!" to "let's give MOST OF THE GAYS kids" which I think then becomes an attempt to normalize it/assimilate gay couples into heternormativity.

I don't know that I agree that it's "safer." I think in some cases, it's presenting that gay people are no different than straight in that some of them want families and kids. Kinda thinking of the Arizona/Callie plot from Grey's Anatomy here, although Arizona didn't actually want kids. I thought that was handled reasonably decently; Arizona wasn't treated as abnormal for not wanting children, but Callie did put it in the realm of "dealbreaker", which... happens.

I do wish there were more childfree people portrayed positively in media, though. It does seem that a lot of the shows I'm watching are focusing around pregnancies and babies, and... eh, I don't really identify with it so much. I accept not everyone is like me, and enjoy watching the shows for the stories of the characters, but it does make me feel a little like the odd one out sometimes.

There's actually a surprising amount of academic work out there (...somewhere, dammit, where did all my links go) on this bizarre fixation entertainment has on the lesbian mother and what it implies.
