*shrug* I doubt people's sex drives (or their ~true love~ for eachother, however you want it, and instincts to want children take into account the true sense of not having any, and how very serious overpopulation can be.

so I'm betting you're going to get shit for the whole "shouldn't have babies" bit. individual people aren't responsible for the fate of humanity entirely, doncha know. longterm thinking hduuu

but if we're talking practically, it'd also be hard to enforce and potentially a human rights violation

I don't particularily want or like children though, so there's my biased skew.

But yes. You don't need to be with another person to be complete/happy, you don't need to be married to the person you're with to be fufilled, and there is nothing wrong with you if you don't have that or want it.

Most people would agree to that phrase straight up, but it's not like the media exactly supports this viewpoint. You can be smart and badass and whatever as long as you eventually settle down and have babies (preferably wearing something tight) is as progressive as it can seem to bring itself.

There is so much wrong with this secret, I don't even know where to begin. The idea that women who settle down with kids can't be "badass" is just as sexist and heteronormative as what you're railing against. I'd understand if you said something like, "I'd like to see more non-heteronormative couples on TV and it makes me sad that some of my favorite characters are being forced into this mold, I feel."

Second, your problem with characters having kids is that "no one should bring a kid into the world nowadays"? Seriously? Not the idea that society makes it seem like you have to have kids and a family unit to be happy, but that no one should be having children ever? How the fucking hell is that a solution to the problem you present? That doesn't prevent heteronormativity. What about all the homosexual couples who might want children through sperm donation or surrogates? Are they not allowed kids too, or is it okay since they aren't heteronormative?

As someone who does eventually want a family with children because I want to, GTFO.

I'm... a little bit offended by the idea that it's "irresponsible" to have children in this day and age. Just because shit is tough in the world doesn't mean the kid won't be loved and adored and taken care of. Why should world affairs dictate someone's want to have children? If we all waited for times to get better before having kids, a good chunk of people on this planet wouldn't be alive right now. Me included.

I don't agree that no one should have babies because it's a horrible world etc., because especially as someone said, that's pretty much always true.

but I do kinda understand the frustration. I'd like to see more female characters who don't want to settle down and/or have kids and stay true to that throughout the plot/series. it seems like even a majority of lesbian characters in movies&tv are settling down and having babies (it makes us safer I guess-- don't worry we're still doing proper lady things like having babies!). I would just like some more who don't like/want kids (or marriage) ever and are fine with that and it's treated totally normal?

Sorry, how is having children heteronormative? I don't like the fact that almost every female main character in books/films/tv shows etc HAS to be paired off with a man, and would love a less heteronormative atmosphere (Media in general needs more LGBT characters) but with this (troll or not) secret there's this assumption that having children is something only straight people do.

I think the idea that having children is something for heterosexuals is harmful and in itself heteronormative. Gay couples can adopt, or have a surrogate child, or get a sperm donor, and there's probably other methods I'm ignorant of. Families aren't just for straight people.

What were they supposed to do? The actress is pregnant! Were they supposed to try and shoot her from awkward angles like they did with Cordelia in season 4 of Angel? The visuals were horrible then, and everyone knew Charisma Carpenter was pregnant.

I mean, I agree that "babies, yay!" is not the progression every female character should take, but this was Real Life Writes the Plot. They did what they good. Get over it. Be happy they're not canceling the show.

It amuses me how you're acting like the current state of the world is the worst thing ever and 'OMG HOW DARE PEOPLE BRING BABIES INTO IT11111!!'. Because, y'know, it's obviously not like the planet has ever seen unstable times before or depressions or world wars or plagues or catastrophic natural events or civilizations collapsing, etc etc.

If people didn't stop having babies when all that stuff happened in the past, why on earth should they now? Life is never easy no matter what time period you're born in. Learn to deal.

I was with you for about the first sentence. Then my nods of approval turns to bewildered head-tilts. If you don't want to have children because you don't think that you're ready for them or just don't really want to ever have kids, then that is completely fine. It is your choice. However, women have been bringing children into this world during dangerous times for thousands of years (including during wars, famines, and epidemics), and as a result we are all here today. It's really strange for you to tell millions of women who want to have kids that they're irresponsible for having them during these "uncertain times".
