What were they supposed to do? The actress is pregnant! Were they supposed to try and shoot her from awkward angles like they did with Cordelia in season 4 of Angel? The visuals were horrible then, and everyone knew Charisma Carpenter was pregnant.

I mean, I agree that "babies, yay!" is not the progression every female character should take, but this was Real Life Writes the Plot. They did what they good. Get over it. Be happy they're not canceling the show.

Not saying I agree with OP, but I've seen shows do some creative things regarding an actress getting pregnant.

Daphne from Frasier gained weight and they had it be a result of some psychological issues and she lost the weight after she "got help" (in real life- after she had the baby.)

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia had Dee get pregnant but she was a surrogate- so there is no baby to worry about in the show (and one would really not work for that show.)

And yeah there is always the "hide it" option, which yes, we will all know the actress is pregnant, but sometimes it's nice to just pretend anyway.

Real life writing the plot is a lazy excuse, good writers can find ways to write the plot they want while still taking into account their actors lives.

The plotline with Daphne was awful. I much prefer the "pretend it isn't there" approach which takes massive suspension of disbelief, but at least spares the atrocious "fat" plotlines.

In this case, it's going to be the show's last season, the character has wanted a baby for awhile even if she doesn't often talk about it, and the show was building to a primary pairing. It's reality writing the show, but a baby is a logical way to round out that story arc, not a "lazy excuse". TBQH, if the actress *weren't* pregnant necessitating the plot, I think the next series finale would have included her announcing a pregnancy. It's not shoehorned in and out of character.

Most hilariously done on The Nanny where Cece's actress got pregnant but not the character and they just lampshaded it the whole time.

During the season where Cordelia is pregnant with Jasmine, and then Jasmine is born early and Cordelia goes into a mystical coma and is only shown lying down for the rest of the season? That was done because Charisma Carpenter was pregnant. She left the show after that season to raise her child. If you watch carefully, after Jasmine is born, we don't get any long body shots of Cordelia.

She didn't leave the show. She was let go, because the writers/Joss are fuckwads who didn't know how to deal and completely screwed up season 4 because she got pregnant.

Plenty of shows have found ways to get around an actress's pregnancy, up to and including putting the character on a bus for a temporary period of time. If writers always feel that they have to write a baby into the plot due to RL, it'd be epic fail. The question is whether or not the development fits well into the story - would you rather endure suspension of disbelief for awhile or sit through a forced and badly done storyline?
