Did you see the Comic Relief episode?

Basically, Amy's wearing a short skirt. Rory's 'doing repairs' in the floor below the command... thingy. Which has a glass floor. Rory stares up at her vag, drops a spanner in something vital, and the universe nearly goes to shits again, only this time it's a goddamn woman's fault for wearing a short skirt. Rory proclaims it's Amy's fault, the Doctor's like 'what?' until he's made to be aware of the skirt 'issue' and agrees. That asshole Moffat made Amy agree as well.

At the end, when all turns out to be just fine, the Doctor tells Amy to put some pants on.

It was disgusting. I deal with that shit enough irl, I don't fucking want Moffat to butcher the show I love into some extra misogyny.

The man's a sexist asshole.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see the show. was it a light-hearted "oh ~Amy~" kind of moment or was it actually a serious "ugh woman this is all your fault :|" kinda thing?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
It was a 'your legs equal sex and us men not crashing this massive space ship because of them is YOUR responsibility, get some pants on you slut' moment.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
ugh gross

man it must suck to have this BS shoved into your face :/
i don't watch it because i don't care about the theme of this show at all, but i feel your pain in having something you love being butchered by sexism

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
It was clearly intended as a lighthearted 'oh, Amy' moment, but in the vibe of, 'oh, Amy, always wearing your short skirts and showing off your lady business'.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
ugh
i still don't understand why Rory wasn't the one to get a whack on the head

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they were granting him a reprieve as apology for killing him off every week? Although that's not really the time to do it, and he mostly gets killed off for being so in love with Amy and whatnot. It's... the more I think about it, the more problematic it is.

[identity profile] ditdatdo.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, iirc correctly, once the Doc figured it out he looked down at Rory and was all like OMG RORY D: and Rory apologises sheepishly. So he didn't totally get away with it but yeah, most of the blame was with Amy.

In my opinion, the whole thing was made worse by how at the time they were talking about how Amy was crap at driving (typical!) and that she only got her licence by distracting the examiner with her beautiful legs. Hmmmm.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
An obnoxiously bad 'oh you slutty women' moment. And it sent me into a vomitty rage. Because the message there was: Men don't have to control their reactions to women. And that's fucking sick and dangerous.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
basically repeating what i said to the other anons

while i wouldn't go into a vomitty rage because i'm disgustingly apathetic, you're right about it being being annoyingly sexist.

[identity profile] bravenewdust.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
But no harm was done to anything and why shouldn't a husband check out his wife? Really? Of all the things to complain about, why choose this one?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
It was a light hearted oh ~Amy~ moment which was poking fun at all the pearl clutching the Daily Mail had done over "omg mini skirts in a family show before the watershed!!!"

[identity profile] prosodi.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing that made me want to flip tables about that was the fact that AMY CAN DO NO RIGHT. If she's wearing skirts, fandom is shouting at her that her skirts are too short and skirts are not for running about (my, I seem to do quite well). If it's brought up in the canon, it's suddenly UNACCEPTABLE. C'mon, how is this different?

(Which is to say: I don't agree with either instance of Amy being slut shamed for her fabulous skirts, but I only heard an uproar about it when it was on the comic relief episode.)

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. To put exaggeration of existing attitudes in a comedy skit for humor value? My god, alert the Feminist Brigade!

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
Except it's really not very funny. Unless you're a Neanderthal.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
Humor, like art, is a matter of individual discernment, even if it plays on universal themes.

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
And those who think that scene was funny are not very discerning.

Also, men being horndogs = universal theme, now? God help us all. Let's have some fresh ideas.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
Rage away. It's your right, after all.

[identity profile] taleya.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
What, a husband being that enamoured with his wife that the chance of an upskirt makes him drop shit? At a time he really shouldn't have?

I think it's funny. And believe it or not, am actually homo sapiens sapiens. Your sense of humour is not other peoples.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's been really the only Doctor Who thing I've found to be particularly sexist recently. Amy could be walking around naked and that still wouldn't excuse Rory's actions. He has a job to do and he fucks it up because he can't resist staring at his wife's crotch. Which I'm sure is very nice and all, but it's not like it's the first time he's seen it or anything. (Not that that would excuse him either.)

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
You left out the part where Amy flirts with herself and Rory gawks and the Doctor makes a crack about how Amy's such a self-absorbed ho she'd obviously be in love with herself.

So not only is she responsible for the crashing of TARDISes because she dresses like a slut when she KNOWS men obviously can't control themselves, but there's also the implication of getting homoerotic with herself for the benefit of the men watching (at least meta-textually, and sorta canonically, as well - she might be genuinely interested in herself, but the joke is still clearly that she's flirting with herself where Rory and the Doctor can see it).

Female characters on television in 2011, folks.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I absolutely agree with your point as a whole, but I also can't help but thinking that Amy, as illustrated so far, kind of is self-absorbed enough that she'd obviously be in love with herself.

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah that minisode left me really uncomfortable, which was too bad, since I quite wanted to like it. ):
