uh, really? I think River is kind of a Mary Sue -- but I like her anyway --, but Amy. . . so, so bland. But Rory is boring too, so...

Maybe people call him sexist because of that interview in which he was, you know... sexist.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
This. I agree so much, Amy's bland and River is just...ugh (Note, I haven't liked any new shows really since Season 1 so..yeah)

And that one interview he really was a sexist ass.

I think Amy is a strong character, but I recall an interview where Moffat said something along the lines of 'every girl's dream is to get married' which was, IMHO, pretty sexist. I'm sure he's said other stuff which confuses me as he seems to be able to write good female characters despite his sexist views... He's like an anti-Joss Whedon or something...

AUTHORS! Y YOUR WRITING NO MATCH UP TO YOUR VIEWS!

[identity profile] vazavati.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
However, since my only interaction with the guy is through his writing, I'm perfectly happy to overlook his IRL sexism and enjoy his fiction if he keeps writing well. >_> Oops?

'Every girl's dream is to get married,' though? Really? -_-

Did you see the Comic Relief episode?

Basically, Amy's wearing a short skirt. Rory's 'doing repairs' in the floor below the command... thingy. Which has a glass floor. Rory stares up at her vag, drops a spanner in something vital, and the universe nearly goes to shits again, only this time it's a goddamn woman's fault for wearing a short skirt. Rory proclaims it's Amy's fault, the Doctor's like 'what?' until he's made to be aware of the skirt 'issue' and agrees. That asshole Moffat made Amy agree as well.

At the end, when all turns out to be just fine, the Doctor tells Amy to put some pants on.

It was disgusting. I deal with that shit enough irl, I don't fucking want Moffat to butcher the show I love into some extra misogyny.

The man's a sexist asshole.

Women =/= kids, Moffat. Keep your filthy hands off them.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think it makes perfect sense that someone who holds women in such contempt would write awesome female characters. After all, they aren't real women, these are women his awesome male self created, so they can be more strong, independent, and interesting than a real woman could ever be!

It is because every time a new show-runner takes over on Dr Who he must be lambasted and hated for something, no matter how insane. Then that something will be held as an article of faith until the next show runner takes over and the hate can start afresh and nostalgia redeem the now previous show runner.

Seriously, seen it so often in Dr Who fandom. Y'know somewhere out there, there is a Who-fan who thinks that Verity Lambert RUINED the show FOREVER!11!one!

I'm with you there, anon. I love them both, I think they're far more interesting than Rory, and they're my favourite companions so far. I don't see the sexism in the writing. What Moffat has said in interviews is a different matter, of course, but strangely doesn't reflect in his writing... so I'm content with just enjoying the show for what it is.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I find River MUCH more problematic than Amy, but I think that sexism in Moffat's writing is much more problematic than the two female characters he's introduced.

In each of his episodes for the first four seasons of New!Who, Moffat introduced four main characters for the episodes. Nancy, Reinette, Sally Sparrow and River Song. On their own, each female character is seemingly OK. Some are more interesting than others (for all the praise Blink gets I think that Sally is BORING. I LOVE Carey Mulligan, but the character's a stump.). However, what's interesting is HOW the characters end up:

*Copypasta from a post I did on another forum about this same topic*
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances- everything really fixes itself when Nancy admits her motherhood.
The Girl in the Fireplace- Reinette's whole life is pretty much defined by her relationship with the Doctor and her real happy ending would be a romance with the Doctor.
Blink- Sally Sparrow's happy end is a relationship. It wasn't needed, it wasn't exactly precedented, but she ends up with Nightingale. Her friend's also problematic, getting sent back in time and being like "OK, let's get married to the first guy I see."
The Silence in the Library/The Forest of the Dead- The ultimate happy ending for River Song is being a mother to the false children.

With all these examples, regardless of the characterization throughout the episodes, the happy ending for all these female characters is either a heteronormative romance or motherhood. River's is actually my hardest one to take in; she's SUPPOSED to be this badass time traveling archeologist, but her ultimate happy ending is caring for her Matrix children.

With Amy... I don't think she's AS poorly written as these other female characters, though the "put your pants on!" and the idea she got her license from her legs in Space and Time just made me uncomfortable. Her happy ending at the end of season 5 was "oh yay, I have a family/husband now" but since her story's continuing past that it's not necessarily a "happily ever after" type of ending. But still, even this season, her story is revolving around pregnancy. So it's not a full subversion.

When it comes to River, I honestly think she's really poorly written as a character. It's breaking the most basic rule of storytelling; show, not tell. We're TOLD she's this epic independent badass, and I want to love her for that. However, on screen, she's defined by her relationship to The Doctor, complaining about how he's not HER Doctor and going on about their relationship. Her main interest at this point in the series is WHO she is to THE DOCTOR. We're essentially told how cool she is, but most of her screentime is dedicated to "I LOVE The Doctor but our timelines are reversed" which is problematic.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy these seasons. But Moffat's writing IS extremely problematic in terms of gender and deserves a lot of analysis.

I think it's because they're at least partially defined by their relationships with the men in their lives (the Doctor and Rory).

But, let's face it -- Davies was not any better in that respect. In fact, he may even have been worse -- Amy is independent and has an attitude, and River is a BAMF explorer/adventurer/ archaeologist/ serial criminal/time traveller/etc. Rose? Defined by the Doctor more than any other companion ever. Martha? Defined by her unrequited love for the Doctor. Donna? Better than the other two, but defined by the fact that she didn't like the Doctor like that.

Additional two cents: Rory is as much defined by his relationship with Amy as she is by him, and the Doctor isn't really 'a man' -- he's so far beyond human that, in a nonromantic context, it makes sense to sort of orbit him.

(I'm not saying the Moff isn't sexist. He's said some sexist stuff. But Amy and River are just as independent, if not more, than Rose or Martha or Donna. Besides, Davies sucked at character arcs.)

Amy is most definitely not my favourite companion. I'm not going to say that being in a heteronormative relationship is bad, but she's being defined by the fact that she's gallivanting around in miniskirts and is basically Scottish eye candy. If my Scottish Granddad was dead he'd be rolling in his grave, except he's not dead and I'm thankful for that.

At least none of the Nine/Ten companions were defined TOO MUCH by their perceived attractiveness.

Besides the things other people have mentioned, the, "...And you've gained a few," crack of the Doctor's towards Amy recently really did my head in. Since when would the Doctor notice or care?!

I'm sure there's other stuff, but it's not coming to my fuzzy head at the moment.

AS RIVER SONG WOULD SAY, SPOILERS FOR THE LAST EPISODE:

HE TURNED AMY INTO AN UNKNOWING/UNWILLING UTERUS ON LEGS

Seriously, that's such a huge fucking violation that there aren't words - the current storyline for the main female character on the show isn't REALLY about her having adventures in time and space after all! Apparently it's about her being kidnapped and rendered unconscious for the duration of a pregnancy, only regaining her mind to find herself in a white room, with a terrifying woman peering at her through a hole in the wall while SHE GOES INTO LABOR while alone and terrified.

WHAT FUN!!!

Wait, wait, you were saying something about Moff's Who not being sexist/problematic?

I guess I'm thick because I never come away from watching Moff!Who thinking, "That was sooo sexist!". I love River Song and I love Amy. I'm amazed when I read some other people commenting that Karen can't act. And since when is it terribly wrong for a female character to be confident and capable and flirty like River Song? I've seen and read my fair share of Mary Sues, and River Song certainly doesn't come off as one.

I am more than willing to concede that there are problematic elements to the characters of River and Amy, and I just have to compartmentalize when I even THINK about Moffat because God knows I could rage at him forever...

but the fact is, Amy is why I started watching, and River is one of the reasons I kept going. I love them (possibly to an unhealthy degree). Haters to the left. ♥

I am the worst Doctor Who fan ever lolol

[identity profile] nice-days.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Until I read these interviews with Moffat now it would never have occured to me that he was sexist. I've always got my "omfg sexism" goggles on, and the few times it doesn't show infrared is when I watch Doctor Who.

That said I cannot agree with people claiming River isn't an awesome character because her life revolves around the Doctor. I mean obviously it would seem like that, wouldn't it? We travel with the doctor, so the few times we meet up with her is when the doctor needs her awesome skills to help him out of a sticky situation. Clearly she's been up to more whenever we aren't "peeking in on her", so to speak.
When she talked to Rory about always waiting she did so because he would actually understand what that entails. He waited over two thousand years for Amy, after all. If loving someone makes you a weak female character then what does that make Rory?
