I guess I'm thick because I never come away from watching Moff!Who thinking, "That was sooo sexist!". I love River Song and I love Amy. I'm amazed when I read some other people commenting that Karen can't act. And since when is it terribly wrong for a female character to be confident and capable and flirty like River Song? I've seen and read my fair share of Mary Sues, and River Song certainly doesn't come off as one.

The main complaints with River as a Mary Sue is really that we're TOLD about her perfection but never really shown it. It's like, "Oh yeah, I am an archeologist/breaking out of every prison ever/learned how to drive the TARDIS better than The Doctor/his one twu luv" etc, but when she's actually on screen her main interactions and dialogue continue to be about her relationship with The Doctor. According to the narrative she is epic, BAMF-y, flawless (though without actually showing a lot of that) and that she's defined by her relationship to a man.

If that's not a Mary Sue I don't know what is. (Even her name sounds like a Mary Sue name. )

I will say, my dislike of Amy Pond has nothing to do with Karen Gillian's performance, and I sort of side eye people who are eager to bash Karen for what I see as bad writing that is totally out of her control.
