Lol what? Independent? Both of their lives basically revolve around the Doctor.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
And Rory's life revolves around Amy.

gosh, TV shows where characters' lives revolve around their relationships, man, ain't seen one of those before

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Word. I swear River's said something about how she lives for the days when she sees him...this man who apparently loves her so much that he doesn't keep her with him but prefers to f*ck about with her by letting them meet at different points. And after introducing this apparently badass, independent character in SITL, Moffat decides to have her happy ending be stuck in a virtual world, being a single mother to three kids who aren't hers. 0_o

As for Amy, when she's not cosying up to the Doctor, she's falling back on 'good old dependable Rory'. The whole thing has a creepy Edward/Bella/Jacob feel to it.

...agreed on both points, and I really like both River and Amy. :( Particularly re: River. It feels like every time she says more about the Doctor and their relationship, she gets a little less awesome and interesting and a little more desperate and pining.

this man who apparently loves her so much that he doesn't keep her with him

Didn't the doctor ask River to travel with him and she turned him down? Or am I forgetting something?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
True but the Doctor at the present time is only just starting to warm to River. And this is still the Doctor who she keeps saying isn't "her" Doctor - the man who apparently knows her so well and she speaks about with such awe and love. If they're so close then why aren't they travelling together instead of her on her own meeting his younger selves? Hopefully there is a legit reason behind this but if it's just supposed to be coying The Time Traveller's Wife then it fails to be romantic to me at all.

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
But if they are meeting each other in different times, is that the Doctor's fault? I don't know what the 'Time Traveller's Wife' is, so I can't comment on that but I thought the premise of River and the Doctor is that neither are at fault as to the circumstance of their relationship are completely out of their control.

Uhh, I'm mostly with you on River, but Amy? I'm not getting the Twilight vibe at all. Rory seems much more dependent on her most of the time than she is on him.

[identity profile] dark-branwen.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair, she's saying she lives for seeing him when she's in prison.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
What crazy talk, it's almost as if the Doctor is the main title character!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Companions come and go,and the Doctor always remains. That's the entire premise of the show since ALWAYS.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly you haven't seen the hot BBCAmerica opening titles, where the narrative leads us to believe it's a show about Amy and Amy's Imaginary Friend.

Obviously it's Rory.

JEEZ.

[identity profile] tenacious-err.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
WHAT?! STOP WITH YOUR LOGIC!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he's never had companions with lives of their own! Martha? Donna? NEVER HEARD OF THEM.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Of course they had their own lives. But to be a Doctor's companion means you have to put on hold your everyday life on Earth and travel with the Doctor in his TARDIS - because the show is all about the Doctor. I understand fans liking companions, some are really awesome but at the end of the day it's not about the companions, it's the Doctor's story.

This is not an ensemble show like Star Trek or NCIS.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Continuing from above. I think people have expectations of Dr Who as if it is an ensemble show and they are bound to be dissapointed because it's not.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he is. But here's the thing-- previous companions, at least in New!Who? They have lives outside of the Doctor. Their entire existence and being was not based on being around and traveling with the Doctor.

Rose had a job and a family and a life, so did Martha and Donna! It was part of what made them interesting, whole characters. When the Doctor left them, they had lives to return to. They had this whole characterization and story to them because there was more to them than just "travels with the Doctor" or "is in love with the Doctor."

Amy? She doesn't seem to have any family or job or anything like that to go back to. She doesn't have any pressing matters... or any seeming life at all in her original time. She exists solely to travel with the Doctor. And marry Rory. THAT'S IT. Other than that, she's... what? She's got nothing. No basis for personality, no basis for history, no basis for anything. Her entire character is "this girl who travels with the Doctor and has a romance with Rory, who is her replacement for the Doctor since she can't have him." In other words, her entire story revolves around... men. It's dependent on men. ENTIRELY involved with them. She has NO real agency of her own, no life of her own.

River is much the same-- her entire identity is "in love with the Doctor, meets up with the Doctor at random intervals, lives for seeing the Doctor," etc. We don't know who she is, what else she's done, why we should even CARE. Her existence is basically orbiting around the Doctor.

Pffft.

I almost wish this was tumblr, so I could reblog this post a million times and thusly explain to my friends why Amy as a character is so frustrating. Of course, they also like her because she is "the most beautiful woman ever" so I don't know how well this would go over.

[personal profile] syien_island 2011-06-04 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ye-ah, when you run with the Doctor, life does basically revolve around him.

[identity profile] taleya.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What? The secondary characters revolve around the main one? The one the show is actually built around and named for? HAVERS!
