uh, really? I think River is kind of a Mary Sue -- but I like her anyway --, but Amy. . . so, so bland. But Rory is boring too, so...

I'm sure he's given a more recent interview that was rather sexist including comments about Amy, but my googlefu isn't helping

I wouldn't call her a Mary Sue, and I like her, but the Doctor is special because of what and who he is and what he's done. From what we've seen, River is a human who for some reason can pilot the TARDIS better than the Doctor, do practically everything better than him, and of course it rankles. It annoyed me too.

EXACTLY. It has nothing to do with her ~omg being a woman~ (listen to her fans long enough and you get the idea you can't think she's a Mary Sue or even dare to dislike her without being misogynist scum or something... even if you hate her story for being sexist.. ummm...). It has to do with the fact that the Doctor is KIND OF A DIFFERENT CASE. River came out of nowhere and can do everything ~perfectly~ for no apparent reason, and to top it off she's SMUG and obnoxious about it. No freakin' wonder some people don't like her. Jeez. :\

I reaaaally hate the "But the Doctor is a Sue too! He can do all sorts of stuff!" argument. We have had almost 50 years of the Doctor as a main character running around and doing stuff. The show is named after him. River just showed up and hasn't really done anything!

It's like... saying you can't dislike Justin Bieber if you like Elvis, or the Beatles.
