I find River MUCH more problematic than Amy, but I think that sexism in Moffat's writing is much more problematic than the two female characters he's introduced.

In each of his episodes for the first four seasons of New!Who, Moffat introduced four main characters for the episodes. Nancy, Reinette, Sally Sparrow and River Song. On their own, each female character is seemingly OK. Some are more interesting than others (for all the praise Blink gets I think that Sally is BORING. I LOVE Carey Mulligan, but the character's a stump.). However, what's interesting is HOW the characters end up:

*Copypasta from a post I did on another forum about this same topic*
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances- everything really fixes itself when Nancy admits her motherhood.
The Girl in the Fireplace- Reinette's whole life is pretty much defined by her relationship with the Doctor and her real happy ending would be a romance with the Doctor.
Blink- Sally Sparrow's happy end is a relationship. It wasn't needed, it wasn't exactly precedented, but she ends up with Nightingale. Her friend's also problematic, getting sent back in time and being like "OK, let's get married to the first guy I see."
The Silence in the Library/The Forest of the Dead- The ultimate happy ending for River Song is being a mother to the false children.

With all these examples, regardless of the characterization throughout the episodes, the happy ending for all these female characters is either a heteronormative romance or motherhood. River's is actually my hardest one to take in; she's SUPPOSED to be this badass time traveling archeologist, but her ultimate happy ending is caring for her Matrix children.

With Amy... I don't think she's AS poorly written as these other female characters, though the "put your pants on!" and the idea she got her license from her legs in Space and Time just made me uncomfortable. Her happy ending at the end of season 5 was "oh yay, I have a family/husband now" but since her story's continuing past that it's not necessarily a "happily ever after" type of ending. But still, even this season, her story is revolving around pregnancy. So it's not a full subversion.

When it comes to River, I honestly think she's really poorly written as a character. It's breaking the most basic rule of storytelling; show, not tell. We're TOLD she's this epic independent badass, and I want to love her for that. However, on screen, she's defined by her relationship to The Doctor, complaining about how he's not HER Doctor and going on about their relationship. Her main interest at this point in the series is WHO she is to THE DOCTOR. We're essentially told how cool she is, but most of her screentime is dedicated to "I LOVE The Doctor but our timelines are reversed" which is problematic.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy these seasons. But Moffat's writing IS extremely problematic in terms of gender and deserves a lot of analysis.

I definitely agree. I'm not opposed to River as a mother, but there's no reason she needs to give up being badass to do so. It definitely didn't help that they weren't even real children and she was choosing to spend time with them over hanging out with her teammates. She was really close to one of them at least.

The only intelligent thing I have to add is that I'm actually really horrified by what I've heard about Amy's pregnancy storyline and am surprised there hasn't been more outcry, because it sounds like Female Body Invasion 101.

My thoughts on River haven't fully gelled yet, but I feel like I would like her more if it seemed like she was doing all these epic things to make herself happy rather than to get the Doctor's attention.

Might be because thus far it's been presented as horrifying in the show? I dunno, might change this week, but yeah, the reveal that she's been pregnant all along was clearly meant to be srsly creepy.

The one thing that bugs me most about the pregnancy storyline (other than the fact that it totally conforms to Moffat's thing that I described above) is the fact that she's like "OK, guess I wasn't pregnant" and The Doctor's doing these body scans of her but not exactly telling her "ok, you might be pregnant and you might not." He's going "OK, this is weird" and ignoring it, and not trusting Amy to make these decisions about her own body. That, I think, should worry people more about The Doctor's characterization. It would be seriously creepy if it got further along in this "pregnancy" and it's like "OH, btw, you're having a baby now" or something like that.

The Doctor is not exactly forthcoming with information with Amy, the whole series 5 plot involved him lying to her about the reason they were traveling together- basically he knew her life was wrong (family members missing) because of the crack.

Him not telling her about the pregnancy could be justified with his suspicion that she was a ganger and it could put her in danger. But overall it seems the Doctor really does not trust Amy and continually treats her like a child.
