I think it's because they're at least partially defined by their relationships with the men in their lives (the Doctor and Rory).

But, let's face it -- Davies was not any better in that respect. In fact, he may even have been worse -- Amy is independent and has an attitude, and River is a BAMF explorer/adventurer/ archaeologist/ serial criminal/time traveller/etc. Rose? Defined by the Doctor more than any other companion ever. Martha? Defined by her unrequited love for the Doctor. Donna? Better than the other two, but defined by the fact that she didn't like the Doctor like that.

Additional two cents: Rory is as much defined by his relationship with Amy as she is by him, and the Doctor isn't really 'a man' -- he's so far beyond human that, in a nonromantic context, it makes sense to sort of orbit him.

(I'm not saying the Moff isn't sexist. He's said some sexist stuff. But Amy and River are just as independent, if not more, than Rose or Martha or Donna. Besides, Davies sucked at character arcs.)

I agree with you about Rose 100%. Martha I disagree just slightly. It was her leaving the Doctor that made her storyline so great. I couldn't disagree more with you about Donna, though. In my opinion, Donna was the most independent companion the Doctor has had in New Who. She was the only one willing to go off and do her own thing (see "Midnight" and "The Sontaran Strategem"). While I thought it was refreshing that she wasn't romantically interested in the Doctor, she was not defined by her disinterest.

Yeah, but Martha refused to remain in unrequited love with him, because she knew it would just be heartbreaking.

And Donna was defined by the fact that she was Catherine Tate, and Catherine Tate really can act. Also, badass over-30's woman.

Oh man, disagree so much on this.

(I will forever be Rose's biggest defender, lol) Rose really was the first companion in DW to have a life BEYOND the Doctor. A lot of people give flack to World War Three and Aliens in London for their cheesiness, but they're amazing in how they really show that there are consequences to running off with a strange man. Early season 1 Rose was fairly dependent on the Doctor, but that's true with any character. However, after learning about the universe she gets to the point where she can go off and investigate by herself, especially in later season two.

Rose DOES learn a lot from The Doctor, that much is certain; that's true of any human who travels with him. However, she has a LOT of defining characteristics that keep her separate. She's ridiculously brave (even in the first episode, when she saves The Doctor), empathetic (regardless of station, if you're a futuristic plumber or morgue assistant, she'll be kind to you and friend), and independent. After Doomsday, what does she do? She goes and works for Torchwood, doing good with herself. She goes and searches for The Doctor WHEN the stars are going out and her own world is in peril, leading the way.

Rose Tyler, though originally in a fairly bad place after giving up school for a man, has risen up and grew through her tenure on the show. She started OFF as defined in her own life by a man and poor choices, but ended up growing to be able to make her own choices and work for what she thinks is right. When The Doctor tries to make decisions for her (in both season 1 and season 2's finales) she goes "Oh no you don't!" and makes her own choices.

Comparatively, while we're told that River is all BAMF and an explorer/archeologist, when she's on screen she really is following The Doctor and complaining about the nature of their relationship. She might be a BAMF off screen, but I propose that Rose Tyler is much more of a BAMF ON screen, having declared her independence.

Both Martha and Donna as well have had similar storylines; they both had low self esteem and images of self worth, but rise up to saving the Earth and being the most important person in the universe, respectively.

All three of RTD's female leads had great arcs of development where they are able to rise up and make their own life choices, which I think is much better than Moffat's.

Thank you! Thank you SO MUCH.

No problem, haha. :) I've thought about this issue A LOT, since I simply adore Rose and have found her to be a great, strong female character since episode one.
