ext_81845: screencap of dusty attenborough with a thoughtful expression, also STUBBLE, from legend of the galactic heroes (think it over)

I was always of the understanding that transsexuals, even pre-transition, don't feel entirely comfortable with the body they were born with (not that they necessarily feel "trapped"), and that was a defining part of being transsexual. I am a bit confused on the distinctions between "genderqueer" and "transsexual" though (and "transsexual" and "transgender" are two different things as well, right?)

Though from what I can tell, the anime adaptation of this manga wasn't that faithful to the original, so perhaps it's not best to judge the characters from the anime alone

(Not op) I read the manga and watched the anime, and personally I'd judge the anime as being reasonably faithful to the anime. The tone of a few scenes were changed, and less depth and detail was gone into, but it wasn't done badly.

I believe these definitions are correct, but if anyone wishes to chime in and tell me I'm mistaken they're welcome to.

Genderqueer: someone who does not fit into the gender binary- they might see themselves as genderless, or belonging to a third gender, or that their gender is fluid or a variety of other things.

Transsexual: Someone whose gender is different to what they were assigned with at birth and who may or may not take hormones and have surgery to transition into said gender.

Transgender: the umbrella term for those that do not subscribe to traditional gender roles, so both genderqueer and transsexual people can be seen as transgender.

However what people identify as is their own choice, so not every person that is androgynous wishes to see themselves as genderqueer, for example.

Genderqueer tends to get thrown around as a catch-all for anyone not specifically female or male identified (cis and non-cis). It's a bit tricky in this secret since the term actually opens doors for basically an infinite number of genders rather than just a third. Since there's no definitive genderqueer, I don't see OP how can read that into a character.
