Not every transperson feels "trapped" in their body, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
This. My spouse has never described herself as being "a woman trapped in a man's body." She just is a woman. She hasn't started the transitioning process yet, but once she does I know she'll be happier because she'll be able to express herself the way that feels natural to her. Which, of course, will be on the girlier side of things. And that's okay, that's who she is.

Shit man, that animation looks just godawful.

I like the animation a lot :(

How can you tell anything about animation from a still picture?

People not knowing the difference between character design and animation will never not piss me off

I get what you mean!!

For a WELL-PORTRAYED MtF anime character, try Grelle from Kuroshitsuji. Just don't venture into the fandom they're all transphobic assholes.

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, honestly curious here. Can you explain why Grell is better-portrayed than Shuu? (And surely not all of us are transphobic. :c)

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
How is he better portrayed than Shuu? Grell is a comic relief character. Trans characters being played for laughs is nothing new or progressive.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
That depends - if you're not trolling, what do you mean by "well-portrayed"?

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
My internet sarcasm meter is wonky these days. I'll go with the hunch that you're just joking.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm tired of people thinking Grelle is trans.

Grelle is a comic relief character whose stereotype is that he is very feminine. It's not uncommon for gay characters in anime and manga to be portrayed in a way that makes them look like they actually want to be female (i.e. using "atashi", wearing dresses, commenting on how they want to be a woman or on the advantages of being one). But he is not trans. He's a joke character.

HAHA Grell is not trans in the original manga, and the anime fucked absolutely everything up and killed everyone, so I refuse to acknowledge it.

While I disagree that Grell is a well-portrayed MtF character, I'm in disbelief that people here still adamantly argue against Grell being trans. We've been over this at least a dozen times within the past year. Holy shit, you guys. In the 2nd musical, she asks to be referred to with female pronouns. And that is the bottom line for me.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree with this a lot. I don't think it's a bad thing, though, or find it unsatisfying. This is why it bothers me when people act like it's an affront to humanity when Nitori is called a "he". He seems to think of himself as a he-- a "he" who wants desperately to be a "she". I think that's a little different from our Western concept of a transperson.

Basically, I think that things with Nitori are slightly more complicated than anyone wants them to be, if that makes sense. I agree that he reads to me as genderqueer more than trans.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, while I think it would be really great if Hourou Musuko included genderqueer representation and all... this... um. No. You're narrowing the definition of trans way too harshly. Speaking as a trans woman myself, what you have described here -- "He seems to think of himself as a he-- a "he" who wants desperately to be a "she"." -- that is exactly how I thought of myself when I was that age, both because I didn't have the right words for it, and I didn't feel like I COULD just say I was a girl, even to myself. The idea that Nitori has to have the self confidence and ability to deny what the rest of the world says about her gender to straight up identify not just as "boy who wants to be a girl" but "girl" to be counted as trans is ridiculous. The terminology isn't perfect, but this is pretty obviously her identifying with female over male. At this stage in her life, those are just the only words she has for it, or at least all she feels like she can identify as, at the moment (either for reasons of confidence or because of cultural context). I mean, she's also said she intends to transition. She's been uncomfortable and worried about the effects of puberty on her. She flat out said she felt tranquility during the fashion show. She ... pretty obviously identifies as female! If your reading of Nitori as genderqueer is really just based on something as minor as "boy who wants to be a girl", I'm sorry, but that's really erasing. Don't get me wrong, it would be really great if it was more complicated than that -- we really do need to see more (any, really) genderqueer representation in media! But nothing I've seen in this series seems to suggest that at all.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
They don't need to go deeply into the body issues thing. A person doesn't have to feel trapped. But the series is subtly showing that Nitori isn't all happy with what's happening with puberty and all, even though dealing with it well. The voice changing thing wasn't skimmed over.

But I think you should read the manga, since it goes further than the anime. There's a little discussion there about transitioning, where it seems that Nitori appears to (at least for now) be planning to transition and live as a women later in life. Or at least that's how I read it.

The "stereotypical" thing, well...there's nothing really wrong with a character being steroetypically girly, is there? Although it would be nice if we could see more about Nitiori's other interests.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't the manga volumes usually open with character intros saying Nitori wanted to be a girl (and Takatsuki wanting to be a boy)? Isn't it kinda clear they have gender dysphoria?

Also, regardless of cultural differences, I think it's silly to say there is only one way to fit into a gender identity; that you must have "this" and "that" to be so. Or to deny that there are folks who do fit into stereotypes irl. Are you also factoring in whether it's the gender role that actually could matter most here?

That said, HM does get lauded for being progressive or magnificent and whatnot, but I do think there's always room for better portrayal even if I love it.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
The manga volumes do start that way, yes. It's pretty clear.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I was always of the understanding that transsexuals, even pre-transition, don't feel entirely comfortable with the body they were born with (not that they necessarily feel "trapped"), and that was a defining part of being transsexual. I am a bit confused on the distinctions between "genderqueer" and "transsexual" though (and "transsexual" and "transgender" are two different things as well, right?)

Though from what I can tell, the anime adaptation of this manga wasn't that faithful to the original, so perhaps it's not best to judge the characters from the anime alone

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
(Not op) I read the manga and watched the anime, and personally I'd judge the anime as being reasonably faithful to the anime. The tone of a few scenes were changed, and less depth and detail was gone into, but it wasn't done badly.

Wow that art style is extremely fug

[identity profile] t3h-toby-chan.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I felt that the whole point of Nitorin's plays (Especially the second one- 'Boku wa onna no ko')was to give her a means to express how she felt by presenting a scenario where everyone in the world goes through the same thing she's experienced; being in the body of the opposite sex. She's young and at an age where verbalizing her feelings is difficult especially when speaking for herself since she's a shy kid. There's no single bit of evidence for her being trans, and not all of them have to do with fitting in a feminine gender role, but she pretty much straight up says she is ("wants to be") a girl, so that's all that really matters, imo.

[identity profile] ragtimesummoner.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
More than anything, I'm glad there's fiction out there (manga no less) where trans is treated as something other than comic relief or "weird"- hell, it's treated as a normal part of growing up. I nearly cried at some parts to how close it was to how I grew up! I really don't want to complain about it not being completely correct myself just because I'm so glad that there's some representation of trans/genderqueer and other LGBT issues that isn't utterly played for laughs.

[identity profile] lurksinclosets.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think what a lot of people skip over is not only the difference between Japan and western countries, but I feel like a lot of people (including you) are missing the language differences. The translation can never be exact to how Japanese is structured, so picking apart what characters say is pointless if you don't know Japanese. This is especially true when it comes to gendered pronouns, which are rarely used in Japanese.

I agree with the first commenter with the, "Not every transperson feels "trapped" in their body," thing. There are two (possibly three, Mako seems confused) trans characters, and they have been written differently to show that not all transfolk are the same. Takatsuki has been shown to have a lot of gender dysphoria, while with Nitori, it's not as evident. The puberty thing had her really worried, though - voice changing, body hair, even height. I don't see how you missed it.
