I think what a lot of people skip over is not only the difference between Japan and western countries, but I feel like a lot of people (including you) are missing the language differences. The translation can never be exact to how Japanese is structured, so picking apart what characters say is pointless if you don't know Japanese. This is especially true when it comes to gendered pronouns, which are rarely used in Japanese.

I agree with the first commenter with the, "Not every transperson feels "trapped" in their body," thing. There are two (possibly three, Mako seems confused) trans characters, and they have been written differently to show that not all transfolk are the same. Takatsuki has been shown to have a lot of gender dysphoria, while with Nitori, it's not as evident. The puberty thing had her really worried, though - voice changing, body hair, even height. I don't see how you missed it.

Word. I don't know what the actual phrasing is in the manga, as I haven't read it, but Japanese is not like English with people saying "he" and "she" all the time. Pronouns are very unusual, especially gendered pronouns.

I actually know a transgendered man here and it took some time to get used to the way I see him interact with society. When other people speak in English about him, they still use "she," but when they speak in Japanese, they use a masculine nickname.

+1

Haven't watched the anime, reading the manga in both languages, and...yeah, basically. :P
