For a WELL-PORTRAYED MtF anime character, try Grelle from Kuroshitsuji. Just don't venture into the fandom they're all transphobic assholes.

How is he better portrayed than Shuu? Grell is a comic relief character. Trans characters being played for laughs is nothing new or progressive.

I'm tired of people thinking Grelle is trans.

Grelle is a comic relief character whose stereotype is that he is very feminine. It's not uncommon for gay characters in anime and manga to be portrayed in a way that makes them look like they actually want to be female (i.e. using "atashi", wearing dresses, commenting on how they want to be a woman or on the advantages of being one). But he is not trans. He's a joke character.

Taking into account the whole sex change thing and also her motivation for becoming half of Jack the Ripper, I don't think it's unreasonable to see Grell as trans. Certainly I wouldn't call it an invalid interpretation.

I can see where you're coming from, but I'm still extremely doubtful of it given the way Grell is shown (as I see it) as the token feminine gay guy. It'd be easier to see him as trans if his characterization was different, but judging by how he's written I can't see it as anything more than a joke and it's actually strange to see how many people take it seriously.

I don't see how Grell being a comic relief character means that the things she says about wanting a sex change and wanting to be addressed as a woman should be ignored. As if it's impossible for a joke character to be trans. "Joke character" =/= "cisgendered joke character".

Eh, it still doesn't matter to me. They never addressed it in the canon itself, so I don't particularly care, and the anime still fucked everything up and pissed all over his character by turning him into a comical ~*gay*~ character.

While I disagree that Grell is a well-portrayed MtF character, I'm in disbelief that people here still adamantly argue against Grell being trans. We've been over this at least a dozen times within the past year. Holy shit, you guys. In the 2nd musical, she asks to be referred to with female pronouns. And that is the bottom line for me.
