I'm tired of people thinking Grelle is trans.

Grelle is a comic relief character whose stereotype is that he is very feminine. It's not uncommon for gay characters in anime and manga to be portrayed in a way that makes them look like they actually want to be female (i.e. using "atashi", wearing dresses, commenting on how they want to be a woman or on the advantages of being one). But he is not trans. He's a joke character.

Taking into account the whole sex change thing and also her motivation for becoming half of Jack the Ripper, I don't think it's unreasonable to see Grell as trans. Certainly I wouldn't call it an invalid interpretation.

I can see where you're coming from, but I'm still extremely doubtful of it given the way Grell is shown (as I see it) as the token feminine gay guy. It'd be easier to see him as trans if his characterization was different, but judging by how he's written I can't see it as anything more than a joke and it's actually strange to see how many people take it seriously.

I don't see how Grell being a comic relief character means that the things she says about wanting a sex change and wanting to be addressed as a woman should be ignored. As if it's impossible for a joke character to be trans. "Joke character" =/= "cisgendered joke character".

Ah-hem. And I present to you this quote from the official character guide (translated from the original, obviously):
"Right now, what are you most dissatisfied with? And what would you like to do most?
- Even if you say right now, what I think has been my biggest complaint since birth is that I am not a woman [I think we can read this as -physically-]. Really, I think God made a mistake."

Won't deny he's not there for comic relief much of the time.
