I just... think of a situation, and think of how the character(s) would react to it, and then (this is the hard part) muck around with the dialogue and inner thoughts until it sounds about right, and... that's it. Plus, I seem to have been the only person in all of fandom who never made up stories about fictional characters before being exposed to fanfiction.
