3. What's a fandom uke? I've never heard that term before!

5. You mean people are writin' Phoenix Wright-related stuff without playing the games? I mean, I can understand reading it, or looking at fanart (a friend of mine did before she got the game), but writing for a series when one has minimal knowledge beforehand just sounds a little odd to me. Like, I think it'd be tricky to nail Phoenix's nice-yet-inwardly-sarcastic nature if you haven't played through at least a couple of cases beforehand.

[identity profile] colortheory.livejournal.com 2007-06-12 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
5. It's that way in just about every fandom right now. Case in point: 99.9999% of all of the stuff currently on [livejournal.com profile] ffvii_yaoi.

9. FFX was awesome. I loved the cinematics. I'm not sure if you're talking about X-2 or 13, but the latter of the two wasn't all that bad. :x Sure, there was a different engine (?) from the tactics team and it was sort of boring in parts a little slow, but there was a story all the same. After saying all that, I still stand by the fact I loved FFX's plot ;; I wish X-2 never came out. Killed the ending of X. *ramble*

12. Awkward much, yeah?

1. Blame the witch hunters going out of their way to rape people up the ass for saying anything Japanese. I'm sick of seeing witch hunters all over fandoms. D:

4. I'm familiar with the urge to. XD

11. Depends on the lecture. Overbearing "BE NICE AND PLAY TOGETHER LIKE PUPPIES OR YOU'RE ALL GROUNDED" or snobby condescending "this is how to write such and such and if you do it wrong you're a fanbrat and I'm going to eat you" lectures need to die in a fire. But lectures directed at the asshats and dicks trolling around purposely stirring up shit are fine by me because really, basic manners and common sense.

13. I used to feel that way. You shouldn't let it get to you, real true friends like you for who you are, not your involvement in fandom!!! *sappy smile* you'll drive yourself nuts and be miserable and never be able to enjoy fandom.

19. Ah, parents. They'll STFU eventually. Mine did!

7. Get new friends? D: I'm sort of indifferent but at the same time I'm not. I WANT TO BE but gah.

8. ROFLCLOPTERS. Another person who misses the joy of TRC's happy beginning?

9. OMG, that game could have been my favorite but something kept nagging me. I also wish FFX-2 never existed. AND THE ZILLION FFVII GAMES. Gackt, GTFO pleeeeeeeeeeeeease.

5. You mean there's more of this? I don't understand why a person wouldn't play the games. It's not like it takes any skill other than having brains. There's no actual... I don't know, gaming-ish stuff as far as controls or anything like that. I guess if you don't have a DS, but... Borrow one? BLEGH. I hate when people do that. D: So secret-maker, I agree and I feel for you.

9. Wait, so you liked X more than XII? (I think that's what you're saying. XD;) I'm like, the exact opposite. :3

10. I agree with you, sort of. I don't have characters saying actual sentences in my head, usually, but sometimes I'll sort of quickly get a feel for their reaction to a certain thing if it pertains to them, or... something like that. No actual talking, though.

12. SORTA FEEL THE SAME WAY. XD

#10 - I think that's more a function of practice with a character. I've been LARPing for years (yes, I'm ashamed of myself for it) and it really is easier to get "in character" and just react to things the longer you've played it. I think the same thing works in writing. It really seems like more of a familiarity thing, since the better you know a character, the easier it is to understand what he/she would do...

Well, I've yet to meet someone in any writing group I've been in that's had a "muse." I've only ever encountered it in fandom. Now, I don't know how indicative is, since that's just my own experience, but...

You're supposed to be writing if you love it, and you want to do it, and you keep on plugging away at it because you love it.

Inspiration comes with practice. :-)

9. FFXII was visually beautiful, but I must agree that I liked X much, much better in terms of plot. FFXII had so much potential and I feel like they wasted it.

10. I don't think it's weird at all that you don't. I personally do have a little muse hanging around, but I wrote just fine before he happened. He's just for fun, you know? I certainly don't think you need a muse to write well.

17. I would have loved for there to be a little mini-series or spin-off that focused on the military. INCLUDING the more "minor" characters and the villains. Like Archer and Kimblee and various others. I liked Ed just fine as a main character, but I did want more of the military.

19. Mom gave up on me with that a long time ago. X)

Definitely not the weird one.

To be honest, when people tell me they have independent characters living in their head and talking to them, and are serious about it, I want to back away slowly. There's a big difference between feeling that a character or plot "speaks" to you and "wants" to be written or even imagining such a thing, and meaning that in the literal sense.

'Cause people in your head talking to you? Yeah, there's medication for that.

Don't wait for inspiration to strike if you want to write. Just write. Inspiration comes with practice, and with getting out into the world and filling your head with sights and sounds and experiences for your imagination to work on.

Re: #10

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2007-06-12 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it's not that easy. Writer's block and all that, and "just work through it" isn't always the answer no matter how hard one tries to do just that.

#5, I hear you. I feel that way about a lot of bands, as well. I love the bands for the music, and I come to find out a bunch of people like them because their main singer or guitarist or whatever is 'omghawt'. I feel like punching them in the mouth. That kind of crap is why so many good bands get left out and a bunch of bad ones get rocketed to the top. H8!

6) What do you want to bet everyone says that about me? XD

7) People who make it only about pairings and characters (unless it's seriously a chara-driven series) can mostly gtfo. There are intelligent people out there. People wouldn't know it, but I'm really quite oblivious to pairings and I rarely "get" characters. All I have left is the plot. <3

8) As a rabid Prince of Tennis fan, I kind of hear where you're coming from. It's SO FREAKING STUPID but I cannot stop reading it.

17) Here, have a big heaping helping of AMEN. <3 the military. They're my boys (and girl). Their moments were my favorite.

[identity profile] demyx.livejournal.com 2007-06-12 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
10. I don't think people are serious when they say they can hear a character speaking to them or something (god, I hope not), I think they mean that they can (or think they can) "feel" what a character's reaction to something oe a situation would be. Something like that. That's what I aim for when I pick a character to RP: If I can think what they think and I consider it to be correct with what the game/book/movie presents them as, then I consider myself to have grabbed a new muse.

If that made any sense.

Despite this, I don't really get why people describe it as independent entities living in their head, so I'm not sure if I exactly have it right either. XD But you're definitely not weird. It can be tough to get inspiration sometimes. Even if I think I can understand how a character feels about something, it doesn't mean I'm motivated enough to put it to words.

15. WORD.

I'm sick of people calling some characters Mary Sues just because they master a skill rather quickly. Maybe Elizabeth was just inherently GOOD at swordplay and picked it up faster than most people could? It happens with sports, it happens with everything.

Jesus, those people would complain if she WASN'T fighting either. What the hell do they want? God forbid a woman actually becomes an equal with the prettier, male characters.

16. That picture is SO cool.

15: How is she not a Sue? Just wondering.

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2007-06-12 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
She's not perfect or faultless. She makes mistakes that are meant to be viewed as mistakes and has character traits that are intended to be viewed as personality flaws just like every other character in the cast.

She has no "tragikal past" and the story doesn't go out of it's way to throw pity parties for her (NO, DAVY JONES GETS THOSE ALL TO HIMSELF and Bootstrap, I guess. Norrington too. Maybe Beckett a little). The writers don't go out of their way to glorify her anymore than the other "hero" characters (and certainly not as much as Jack Sparrow).

Her only "Sue-ish" traits are:

1) She mastered the sword very quickly between PotC 1+2. Which is a little inexplicable, yes, but if the writers wanted her to be able to participate in sword fights in the second and third movies, shouldn't we girls be happy that our gender is represented in the epic battles? ALSO, she was pretty decent at fighting using random objects in CotBP as it was and she probably had Will (who, the writers have stated, is the best swordsman in the cast) teaching her. It's not so hard to believe that she caught on quickly.

2) "All the men are in love with her". Which, yes, maybe a little. But a lot of it is for plot purposes/comedic effect. Seaman are horny, ha ha ha, ect. Sao Feng only wanted her because he thought she was Calypso; Barbossa was more interested in the apple; Jack's a whore, c'mon (and got over his momentary infatuation pretty quickly). Which leaves Will- her actual love interest, and Norrington who loved her in the first movie BEFORE anyone accused her of being a Sue.

3) She's female and capable. Quickest and easiest way to earn a fangirl's ire.

Answer your question? ^__^;;

7. Wait. I don't know how much better it's going to get. :\ Unfortunately, for every fandom tard that grows up, there are ten more. Lurk and wait to spot the cool ones?
9. The cosplayers seem to get better the more time goes on, so just give 'em time to create that obscene filigree everyone seems to be sporting. (I hope.)
10. People play pretend a lot. None of the stuff that even gets close to "muse" sort of things shows up until you've been writing for YEARS with the same character. (And that's not your character being like, "omg i think ur best freind is hawt u shuld draw them!" or some dumb shit like that; it's more something like you plan a situation and then it just turns out that your character wouldn't react the way you thought they would. That's the closest your character gets to "talking" to you, at least in my experiences.) You're not the weird one. ^^
16. This is such a cool photograph.

[identity profile] stalkerbunny.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
10. I'd also like to say...(thought I haven't written for that long and am no expert)
Often when I'm writing a character (doing something or talking with others or whatever) it feels very difficult and stilted and awful...and other times it's quite easy and fluid. It's not like they're telling me what to write, but in some rare cases the writing is going easily enough to almost feel like that. So if I was talking about muses "telling me what to do",(which I haven't done often, I think, and gotten less inclined to use the word after having read here how much it annoys some people) I wouldn't be meaning it seriously...it would just be an excuse for the crazy stuff people I write, is all. >///>
And all this is just how writing feels for me, personally, and I suspect it different for other people.
