Okay, I am honestly wondering, how many people are legit triggered by character death? I understand there's an aversion/squick to reading about Characters You Like Dying, but I don't think I've ever seen it discussed in the context of an actual psychological trigger. Is this a common thing that I'm just oblivious to for some reason?

I don't know if being triggered by deathfics is a common thing, but I've seen enough death in real life. I prefer to have the knowledge and ability to skip over it when consuming fiction, because it's always an upsetting reminder of watching people I love suffer and die.

I wouldn't consider myself triggered by character death or anything, but there have been a few character death fics (over several years of reading fic) that... stick with me for a while afterwards, because they're written in a way that makes it seem very final. And I end up with the feeling that everything is sad forever now. That feeling usually goes away after about a week.

It's not... something I could define well enough to actually expect a warning for. Like I said, I'm not even sure if that counts as triggering.

There's also the idea that people read fanfic because they're looking for something that they like with more of a discerning eye than they would apply to, say, staring at a shelf in a bookstore. With fanfic people know what they like and oftentimes like to at least have a general idea of what they're getting themselves into. Personally, I'd love to dig into a fic that starts off as the happiest story of all time and eventually spirals into total despair, but not everyone's into that.

yeah, too many people confuse "trigger" with "makes me mildly uncomfortable". The problem is all the people that just can't cope with feeling uncomfortable, or think their preferences override anyone elses.
