Thank you. I am not interested in reading a fic where summary says everything that's going to happen.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

[identity profile] lillian-raven.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This totally reminds me on this one glee author and his/her reaction after some fans were very angry that one of her/his fic end with chara death...

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally don't like warnings for character death -- not when I write and not when I read. To me it's a plot point that just doesn't need to be spoiled like that. But I try to take into account that there are any number of people deeply upset by it who really do want a warning.

Generally I believe in using whited-out warnings, that way people can be warned if they want and not if they don't. (I know, it doesn't work on every site, unfortunately.)

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
just one of many, many, many valid reasons why warnings are dumb.

Ever heard of spoiler tags?

But I don't think there are many people who think that warning for anything more than "dark fic" or "angst" is necessary for fics that contain character death.

If there is a lot of torture or the death is particularly gross you should probably add something about "gore" and "extreme situations," but otherwise warning for the overall tone of the fic is more than sufficient.

Sounds like you're plenty polite in your warnings already. A common sense approach to warnings is all that's ever needed.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, to each their own. I've had those feelings you describe while knowing full well that a character was going to die because was the writing was good enough to to make me react that way without resorting to the "surprise!death" shock tactic. To me the ability to do that, despite the readers forsight, demonstrates a stronger writing ability.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Dark fic" is plenty of warning, OP.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
ITA. That ruins it.

So much.

CSS works in many cases.

That way it can be highlighted by someone who wants to find out, and ignored by someone who doesn't.

Yeah, honestly, "dark" is a pretty good warning in itself. It doesn't spoil, but it says "hey, there's going to be some pretty depressing/fucked up stuff in here!"

[identity profile] flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. If readers really really can't handle reading something with a character dying, I can't ask them not to talk with other people who've have read my whole fic or wait until they can peek ahead at the last chapter or something to know what to expect. But it's not my damn problem.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK. YOU.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Why should we give spoilers in the summary?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only this, but when characters end up -not- dying, I still want the reader to worry for them when they're in danger – and that doesn't work as well if they know that if anyone died I'd have said so in the warnings section.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless you're say who dies, the warning won't change the impact, but will help people who doesn't want to read something like that to avoid your fic.

But if your writing is so predictable that saying someone dies kills the suspense, then it's your problem.

This is when you either use a spoiler tag, warn for "possible character death," or warn for no warnings at all.

I kind of wonder what people do in the real world, where books don't warn for death or torture or rape etc. in advance. Books don't even have MPAA ratings. Things like dark (and sometimes violent) can be gleaned from a back cover and critcisms, but that's all you get and really all I care to get.

Caveat: I don't have any triggers, so it doesn't particularly matter to me if those things are warned for or not. But again, what do you do when you read a book sight unseen?

Okay, I am honestly wondering, how many people are legit triggered by character death? I understand there's an aversion/squick to reading about Characters You Like Dying, but I don't think I've ever seen it discussed in the context of an actual psychological trigger. Is this a common thing that I'm just oblivious to for some reason?

I think your system could potentially be more helpful. A warning for angst, dark themes, and gore is more descriptive than a warning for character death.

That said, I've personally found that spoiler-y warnings don't take anything away from a well-made piece of fiction. The mere fact that a character dies isn't the important thing; the real impact comes from the details. YMMV, of course.

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, and I don't warn for deaths in my stories, either. And get yelled at it for it.
