I totally understand why you'd think like this as I did too - pretty much exactly - several years ago. I had a story where a main character died and I put a note at the end saying basically, "Sorry, but I didn't want to spoil it, so no warnings." I hated being spoiled for things at all, still do, because for me it means you're half looking out for something you know is going to happen and it distracts you from enjoying the entertainment. Anyway, I just couldn't see a good enough reason to warn because as I thought, you don't get warnings for death in real life, in books, so why should you in fic?

And then I got a review from someone who said that the reason they would have appreciated the warning was because two close people in their life had just died, and they were trying to stay the fuck away from death as much as possible because they were trying to escape from thinking about it for a bit. They thought of fic as an escape as usually it's pretty easy to work out what kind of fic it's going to be, seeing as we have genres of fluff and hurt/comfort and all, and they were used to using online as a sort of safe space (which I think a lot of us do. It's like we can interact with whoever and do whatever we want, but we have the control. If we don't like something we can click away immediately). Anyway, she wasn't even angry with me, just saying it was something that had really upset her because she wasn't expecting it, so I thought, y'know, that makes sense...

And then someone else commented with the option of using HTML to make white font and a white background so people who wanted to be warned/spoiled could select the text and do so, and those who didn't could ignore it. Seemed like the best option to me and I have used that ever since.

I see the problem. That reviewer had mistaken the internet for a personal space.

Hint: The internet is not a comfortable safe personal space, it is a public space. Everything that normally happens in public spaces should be expected to happen on the internet. Including stories with scenes depicting a baby donkey being raped to death by a large, angry, sailor that crept up behind it while focused on being outraged by words on a computer monitor. He's behind you now, you ass.

While your third sentence is true, the general tenet I like to live by is, "Make yourself happy without making others miserable in the process." Therefore, if I can easily put in a couple of lines of HTML, or a sentence at the start of a fic to say, "Warnings are down at the bottom if you want to scroll," it won't make that much difference to me but it might make a hell of a lot of difference to someone else.

Equally while I swear like a sailor a lot of the time I do try not to do so in public because I'm aware that a lot of people don't like to hear others swearing, especially not in front of children. It's not that difficult for me to restrain myself (though I do occasionally fuck up, as it were) and I feel it's a small price to pay for being a decent human being rather than a dick.

But, YMMV.

You're a nice person. I wish there were more like you. The world would've been a much better place then.

Thank you very much. :-) I appreciate the comment. I'm definitely not perfect but I do try, and to me that's a lot of what matters.
