Same. Occasionally I may have a fantasy of my favorite pairing engaged in vanilla sex, but I mostly prefer fandom characters pure. Same with my own original characters, even the ones who have children halfway in the story. I guess I'm just not interested in writing or thinking about sex. The purity of the characters helps with the escapism as if I was falling into my own Neverland, far from this world and into a world that I was familiar with as a small child.

It's cool that I'm not the only one like this.

I'm not that extreme, but I don't personally care much for smutfic either, or even shipfic. You might be a numerical minority, but you're so far from alone.

Just write some good gen; I'm sure plenty of people will appreciate it.

I enjoy sexual fics not because they arouse me, but because they often present a deeper, more intimate look at the characters and flesh out (no pun intended) their lives.

That is part of the enjoyment for me as well.
A lot of the time I just want to read fics about certain characters and I do not care if it is smut, fluff, gen, or whatever.
Part of the appeal of sexual fics is the feeling that that part of the characters isn't being edited out.

Well, you are in the minority, but fandom isn't about what the majority think, it's about what makes each of us as individuals happy. If it ruins your image of the characters to see them in relationships, that's neither bad nor good, it's just something useful to realize about yourself. Headers make it pretty easy to avoid the shippy stuff. If you don't enjoy it, you aren't missing anything by avoiding it.

As long as you don't get all judgey or feel superior because other people don't have the feelings and relationships to the characters as you do, you'll be fine.

So are you capable of feeling those things for characters who aren't your favorite? Because I can kind of see where you're coming from. In my teens, my friends would all get crushes on band members of our favorite groups, and I just... couldn't. To me, the music was such a sacred part of my identity (And it's interesting the way that happens in our teen years. Music is used as such a divider and a sort of label.) that getting a crush on one of the musicians just couldn't happen for me.

And even now, looking back, I can't see them as viable crush objects. But actors? Sure! Because I don't see them, in any way, as a role model or important to my expression. So there's a distance, maybe? And they are easy to crush on.

Doing so about real people or other people's characters felt awkward. It still kind of does.

And for those who say they are concerned with OP thinking sexuality is degrading or whatever... I didn't interpret it this way. I interpreted it as it's degrading to masturbate to someone's image (mental or picture) without their knowledge, which I agree with. I'd be creeped out if I found out someone was doing that to me, and all. But uh... I don't think that applies to fictional people. But if you get attached enough to a character, sometimes you want to respect their wishes even though you know they aren't real, so I kinda know what OP means.

I just think it's insulting to the creators, unless the original material already makes it a point to sexualize characters / is porn / etc.

I certainly wouldn't want a bunch of creepers getting off on my mental creations, especially those I may have put some of my personality in.
