Funny that you say that, because to me Hawke will never be anything but female, and she looks nothing at all like the official artwork, to the point where it's jarring. (My Hawke was a redhead with the Bethany haircut and a huge underbite). I actually had to quit my second playthrough, when I rolled a male Hawke, because it felt all fucking wrong to me. Everything about him screamed generic "gritty" fantasy hero to me, down to his flat voice acting. (Really, people complain about femHawke's voice? o.O I thought her VA was vastly superior to maleHawke's, which is the other reason I had to quit that playthrough.) It just goes to show that everyone gets different things out of Bioware games and everyone's headvision is different (personally, I got real tired real quick of f!Cousland's oversaturation in Origins fanworks, but that's just me).

Hah, so is mine! ♥ Minus Bastila; The hypocrisy annoyed the crap out of me. :p

It likely just comes down to individual perception. FemRevan, mHawke -- for me Shepard can be either, because you can tell the writers tried really hard to make ME accessible to both. The point is in all cases it's not the protagonists' ambitions or successes that make me stop and think, "Nah, a girl couldn't do this" or compassionate moments being totally beyond male characters. It's just little mannerisms they have can be interpreted by people as leaning towards one sex or the other, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Re: f!Cousland, I'm one of those people who is really affected by fandom ebbs and flows. I admit it freely, can't help it, and as such I will never again play that Origin story. I clamped down pretty heavily on City Elf and Dwarf Noble, so it wasn't the only reason. But still. :/
