THAT'S what it is. She does sound smug. That's what's bugged me about her voice. And since I usually use the snarky comments, it comes across as her thinking she's made the funniest joke ever, which makes it worse. Male Hawke is probably of a more 'traditional' fantasy hero mold voice, but he works pretty well for me.

"it comes across as her thinking she's made the funniest joke ever" HAH yes this is exactly it! There's nothing more awkward than hearing her smuggily smug out a smug joke, only for all of the NPCs to ignore it and move onto the next topic of conversation. Nobody ever laughs. It makes it seem as if Hawke is a wilfull, precocious eight-year-old who they are all kind of indulging and hoping she grows out of her smart-ass phase. If you tried that snark stuff in real life, nobody would put up with it, least of all a heavily-armored warrior like a Templar.
