there's a lot of dumb people out there, so if you've got girls running around pretending to be dudes for fun, it can be pretty harmful to the perception of people who actually DO have gender issues

Alright, you've got a point there but you're also implying that anyone who pretends to be male online is pretending to have gender issues.
Sometimes it's simply beneficial, for example when on some video game forums. They're so concentrated with actual men that it's just easier to blend in.

I agree, but at the same time, not all trans people tell people that they're trans or want to be open about that. And trans people are often given shit and treated like liars (though maybe not in fandom as much) for not disclosing that they're trans. There's also confusion sometimes between people who are lying about their gender and people who are most likely trans. So I can see how people actually pretending to be another gender could create a less comfortable environment for some trans people.

But I'd hope that most fandom people are open-minded enough where this isn't as much of an issue.

Pretending to be anyone doesn't create any sort of environment for anybody as long as the person doint it doesn't admit to having lied and is careful enough not to be caught lying. No one can really prove that someone is lying about their gender or about not being trans.

Yeah, but they're not identifying as trans men, they're just saying they're men and unless they tell no-one will actually know.

But they aren't presenting themselves as trans men. And how do you know they don't have gender issues? Not being trans =/= not having gender issues, period.

And what about people whose gender expression involves fluid presentation, or exploring themselves by observing how well they can pose as the gender they don't identify with?

The OP gave no reason for her actions. It's rude to invalidate her motivations to ~just for fun~ and assume that she isn't doing it for any personal, gender-related reasons. :\
