In the finale he expresses the intention to punish Raphael's followers (if I'm not mistaken), simply because they chose to follow a different leader during the war. There was no personal betrayal in this instance, but now that he has godlike power, he aims to cause serious, potentially fatal harm to all of them just to smite them for choosing sides unwisely (in his opinion). He hasn't acted on this desire yet, but the intention is there, saturated with pride and sociopathy.

I don't know if he's just as bad as Lucifer yet, in that he doesn't have a legion of minions at his feet nor does he have a HQ of all things Bad and Evil. But Lucifer was cast from heaven because he became taken with his own glory and power. He corrupted his wisdom for the sake of his splendor. Moreover, he wanted to take God's place, to be more than an angel of God, and to essentially throw God from his throne. Castiel has certainly started down that road, and I think the scene where he snapped his fingers and exploded Raphael in much the same way that Lucifer snapped his fingers and exploded Castiel in the season prior is a pretty strong indication that Castiel has undergone a similar fall from grace.

I love Castiel, so I'm hoping the writers plan to do a redemption arc for him. They seem pretty big on redemption arcs for their main protagonists, and frankly it would be a letdown if they do not at least attempt it. But… I do agree with [livejournal.com profile] davidshephard on the point that Castiel probably will die after all is said and done. Thematically speaking, his transgression was substantial, and it's just very typical to see characters like this die after or during their atonement.

But FWIW, Castiel's intention was to stop armageddon and the killing of mankind and at the moment he stepped over into punishing angels severely for following Raphael he seemed to have literally gone mad.

Yes, this is true. As much as I don't like to fall back on proverbs for arguments, though, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Oh, definitely. He could totally be a new Lucifer in his current state, however he started out. I can just see how he could be redeemable if he turned around.

Yeah, I can see how he can be redeemable, too, actually! Original intentions aside, the main difference between Castiel and Lucifer is that Lucifer acts as a sole entity. His actions, ambitions and thirst for power are all his own. On the other hand, Castiel is acting as a walking amalgamation of souls -- and this is just conjecture here, but I would bet many of them are malicious in nature, which would explain why Ellie had wanted to keep the gate closed, to keep the monsters sealed within Purgatory. Castiel's consciousness is presumably the one speaking through the vessel, but even if it is, it's being inundated with entities that are not Castiel's own. There's a lot of strength to be gained from containing them, but probably also a lot of chaos as they swirl around inside his head. It's easy to see how he could be driven to madness, and how he could descend further with their continued presence. If the souls are somehow removed, or if he finds a way to overpower their chatter, then yes, I can totally see him taking the steps necessary to move towards redemption.

Yep. There are enormous parallels between Castiel and show!Lucifer and Castiel and the Lucifer of Paradise Lost, which iirc the SPN writers have acknowledged drawing upon for inspiration. I hope they give God!Cas a redemption arc and that he doesn't die at the end of it, but there's no question in my mind that there does need to be an active process of redemption, because Castiel has done and presumably will continue to do awful things.

I agree with all those points, only I don't think Castiel should die at the end of a redemption arc. He might, but I don't think he should. To me it would be good to see something atypical in the writers trying to have Cas deal with his past actions and work through his issues, rather than killing him off and making things easier for the narrative. If he dies through self-sacrifice, I guess I'd be okay with that, but I'd rather see some follow-through.

I suppose I could have worded my thoughts a little better in regards to Castiel's fate. I don't want him to die, either. I think it would be great if the writers let Castiel try to deal with the ramifications of his actions, but... I do think it is more typical for a mainstream television show to follow tried-and-true formulas, and in the case of atoning for huge transgressions, death seems to be a big, rather predictable outcome.

Oh, my bad. I shouldn't have assumed. Yeah, Cas being given a redemption arc would be refreshing and interesting for me to watch, so that's what I'm hoping to get, even though I'm not completely expecting it :P
