(Anonymous) 2011-06-06 09:37 am (UTC)(link)Eh, I'm still undecided about whether or not the mages would seek to create dominance over non-mages. Tevinter is a culture that supports slavery and blood magic and all that fun stuff, while as far as we can tell the rest of Thedas finds it abhorrent. At least at first, the majority of free mages would shy away from seeking power. Whether it would remain that way is debatable, but I don't see it as reasonable to prevent them from having freedom as a precaution against them gaining political power.
I kind of support a system where the mages are checked, but not forced to remain in the Circle once they've passed their Harrowing. Templars would still be present, but not in quite the same position of power as they currently are. The problem is, reaching that point is in the very distant future, and it's difficult to determine the best course of action to reach that point at present.
