Question:

How many superheroines do we have who kick ass and aren't sexual? I think our quota is filled.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. :/

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well, for me, there is definitely a difference between "sexy" and "sexual" and while the two *may* overlap at times, they're not the same thing. As such, anything by Frank Miller Black Canary from "All Star Batman and Robin" would be 'sexy' but not 'sexual' IMHO. The problem is, the difference between "sexy" and "sexual" isn't the same for everyone, so even if I listed off the superheroines I thought were "sexy" (exploitively) and not "sexual" (which, for Diana, I will admit it depends on the writer/issues), that doesn't mean that that's the same for everyone.

I just hate being told that, if I claim to be 'feminist, I must act and think a certain way. It's part of the reason I'm really hesitant about calling myself a 'feminist' (I'm working on that, though). Seriously, though, feminism *should* be about choice (apparently, according to those not insane- i.e. not what I grew up with), and I choose to see Diana (again, depending on the writer/storyline) as sexual and empowering in her outfit.

I don't have much stock in Wonder Woman's outfits, it just your comment specifically that bothered me. When every incident of an action woman acting/dressing sexually is defended with 'it's good that a woman can be sexy and still kick ass', I start to call bs on the excuse.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Eg, Diana's really only one of three people I feel this way about. Wonder Woman, Black Canary, and Powergirl. Everyone else I'm more iffy on, but for these three, it holds true for me.

(Same person as above, I just forgot to log out.)

Fair enough. I don't know enough about comics to say whether Wonder Woman is someone this would apply to. But I'd prefer 'it's in character for her to be sexual' to 'women can be strong and sexual!', as it's such an old, annoying chestnut.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'll keep that in mind for a better phrase to use, then. I must admit, I was reacting simply to the comment about Diana, though. ^^;;

It's the blue curtains phenomenon. Each individual representation of blue curtains isn't problematic in and of itself, but once you step back and realize there are no red curtains anywhere, you have to wonder.

I mean, I got my start in the Transformers fandom. All the women kick ass. But we've only got one Transformer female who isn't either feminine (light colors, curves, delicate physique, etc) or outright sexualized. Two, if you count her incarnation in TFA, which was awesome but had less than five minutes of screntime.

And this is giant robots!

Video games aren't any better. Oh well, all I can do is vote with my wallet; buy those series that either don't objectify, or do so in an equal opportunity fashion. Something has gone awry when men are wearing body armour and women are wearing bikinis.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Which means we either put up with objectification or miss out on good games. Fun times.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm totally stealing that metaphor

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Go for it - I stole it myself >_>

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'll also be stealing it, because I can totally see it applying to a lot more things than sexuality. Good metaphor!
