Judge away.

Personally, I *enjoy* the fact that Wonder Woman can be sexual and still kick ass.

This.

because you have to be wearing lingerie to be sexual? i don't have any horses in this race, for the record, but that's kind of a fucked up implication you're making here.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
No, but that is what Diana is to me. Strong and sexual. Plus, I don't see it as "lingerie", but as more of a leotard. YMMV, of course.

Do you have any idea what lingerie is

[identity profile] riverfleur.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
And it's also kind of fucked up if you think a girl can't kick ass and wear sexy clothing at the same time. What is this the '50's or some ultra conservative time? It's like your implying a character can only be empowering if she covers every piece of her skin to avoid the risk of being provocative.

Saying a woman ought to dress less sexy just to be considered a kickass female role model is nothing but a sexist double standard.

And just because it might be considered eye-candy to guys should not lessen what the character stands for. Clothing is just superficial. Empowerment is about what comes from within.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
No. Ah, how was it put somewhere... She's the subject of her own sexuality, not the object of someone else's. At least, that's how I feel Wondy is MEANT to be. Obviously it varies from writer to writer, but you can't help that. The lady who runs DCWomenKickingAss.tumblr.com notes the difference *very* well in a recent post. I'll summarise for you here, but go read anyway.

Black Canary, as drawn here by Adam Hughes, is looking sexy and powerful. Is she being objectified here? Not really. Yeah, the outfit and expression is a tease, but its not Canary's defining trait here. I love this outfit drawn like this. She obviously looks good in it, and feels good in it. Shes EMPOWERED by looking sexy. http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lm8o3eH8VG1qbujox.jpg

Then, there is Black Canary here, as drawn by Ed Benes. http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lm8obazip21qbujox.jpg
Same costume, very different focus. Instead of Canary being tough, in control, AND sexy, she has been drawn to flaunt her boobs, hips, legs and more foremost. Her leotard rides RIDICULOUSLY high, her pose flaunts her assets - no one would really hang off a gargoyle posing like that. She's still gonna kick your ass, but she's being objectified by the viewer, not strengthened by her own sexiness.

As a feminist comic fan, I love the first Black Canary, and hate the second one. Does it really have anything to do with the outfit itself? Not so much. It has to do with WHY the outfit was chosen, and HOW it is presented.

I loved Wonder Woman's redesign. Unfortunately, poor writing basically killed her relaunch, which is why she's back in the old outfit. I quite like the old outfit, but only when she is presented wearing it because she is strong and beautiful and is proud of her body, rather than wearing it to please the readers' fantasies.

Sorry anon. I'm not really attacking your point. I just hit reply here. Though in response to you, you *can* be sexual without wearing lingerie... but its okay to be sexual with lingerie too. What do you have against lingerie? I fucking love it, it makes me feel great.

Question:

How many superheroines do we have who kick ass and aren't sexual? I think our quota is filled.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. :/

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well, for me, there is definitely a difference between "sexy" and "sexual" and while the two *may* overlap at times, they're not the same thing. As such, anything by Frank Miller Black Canary from "All Star Batman and Robin" would be 'sexy' but not 'sexual' IMHO. The problem is, the difference between "sexy" and "sexual" isn't the same for everyone, so even if I listed off the superheroines I thought were "sexy" (exploitively) and not "sexual" (which, for Diana, I will admit it depends on the writer/issues), that doesn't mean that that's the same for everyone.

I just hate being told that, if I claim to be 'feminist, I must act and think a certain way. It's part of the reason I'm really hesitant about calling myself a 'feminist' (I'm working on that, though). Seriously, though, feminism *should* be about choice (apparently, according to those not insane- i.e. not what I grew up with), and I choose to see Diana (again, depending on the writer/storyline) as sexual and empowering in her outfit.

[identity profile] stlg13bomber.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have much stock in Wonder Woman's outfits, it just your comment specifically that bothered me. When every incident of an action woman acting/dressing sexually is defended with 'it's good that a woman can be sexy and still kick ass', I start to call bs on the excuse.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Eg, Diana's really only one of three people I feel this way about. Wonder Woman, Black Canary, and Powergirl. Everyone else I'm more iffy on, but for these three, it holds true for me.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
(Same person as above, I just forgot to log out.)

Fair enough. I don't know enough about comics to say whether Wonder Woman is someone this would apply to. But I'd prefer 'it's in character for her to be sexual' to 'women can be strong and sexual!', as it's such an old, annoying chestnut.

It's the blue curtains phenomenon. Each individual representation of blue curtains isn't problematic in and of itself, but once you step back and realize there are no red curtains anywhere, you have to wonder.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I got my start in the Transformers fandom. All the women kick ass. But we've only got one Transformer female who isn't either feminine (light colors, curves, delicate physique, etc) or outright sexualized. Two, if you count her incarnation in TFA, which was awesome but had less than five minutes of screntime.

And this is giant robots!

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Video games aren't any better. Oh well, all I can do is vote with my wallet; buy those series that either don't objectify, or do so in an equal opportunity fashion. Something has gone awry when men are wearing body armour and women are wearing bikinis.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Which means we either put up with objectification or miss out on good games. Fun times.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm totally stealing that metaphor

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Go for it - I stole it myself >_>

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. Seriously, are you telling me they don't make male super heroes overtly sexual? There's so much homo-eroticism AND the costumes accentuate their "packages." There are two sides.

[identity profile] specimen-47.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
lol

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Cause a woman can't be covered up and be sexy too, right?

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-06-08 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, woman can... I was specifically pointing out what I personally love about Diana, though. <3
