If you don't have at least a little bit of an oral fixation, kissing by itself is probably not going to be all stars-and-fireworks, although it can still be really nice. Also, technique counts (and will improve over time). I once decided I was not going to have sex with an otherwise fairly attractive guy because he kissed so badly I burst out laughing. Swear to the gods, it was like I was kissing an oyster.

And ditto to the comments that a first kiss at 18 is no big deal. These things happen when they happen, not on any kind of a schedule.

OMGS. I feel you. I once laughed in a guy's face because he kissed like a Hoover. Needless to say I turned down his offer of having breakfast with him the next morning :p
