Eh, kisses can range anywhere from awful to panty-soaking depending on the person, the situation, your mood, whatever. You'll get the hang of what works and what doesn't work with you in time. Good luck, OP~

It gets better, anon! Or it did in my case, at least. Had my first French-type kiss at the late age of 20, was very underwhelmed (perhaps because we were doing it wrong, kind of)... but a few weeks later, I started enjoying kisses. They can be pretty awesome.

Never understood the whole lack of oxygen thing in fic, though.

I didn't get my first kiss until I turned 23, and it was amazing. Nothing wrong with being a late bloomer. Sure, waiting for "the right guy" dragged it out in my case, but it was worth it, and we are still good friends. Also, I think just how "good" or "bad" a kiss ends up being has an awful lot to do with the chemistry between the two people involved. Not whether or not you have good technique.

hahaha i had my first kiss when i was 18 too and it was DISGUSTING. i'm not too confident in my skillz, but i've definitely had kisses that were waaaay better since then. a lot of it depends on the situation, anon-- how you feel about the person, the mood... whether you're drunk...

1. You probably aren't doing it wrong
2. Yes, however, it is possible to do it wrong. This happens when the two people have no chemistry.
3. Kissing CAN be as fucking unbelievable as it is in fanfiction. Right place, right time, right person, right chemistry.
4. The lack of oxygen thing is referring to the kind of kiss where you are so overwhelmed by arousal and are literally breathless from how awesome the kiss is, despite breathing through your nose.

Extra. You are definitely NOT pathetic for having a first kiss at 18. It happens at a different time for everyone. Some sooner, some later.

If you don't have at least a little bit of an oral fixation, kissing by itself is probably not going to be all stars-and-fireworks, although it can still be really nice. Also, technique counts (and will improve over time). I once decided I was not going to have sex with an otherwise fairly attractive guy because he kissed so badly I burst out laughing. Swear to the gods, it was like I was kissing an oyster.

And ditto to the comments that a first kiss at 18 is no big deal. These things happen when they happen, not on any kind of a schedule.

Well the breathing thing, now that I think about it, I think I kinda forget to? I mean I can breathe, I don't know why I wouldn't. But I just don't. Maybe its an instinct where my body thinks I'm eating something and doesn't want to inhale food or something.

When I read fanfic and saw how the characters would kiss, I would think "WTF!? Do people seriously bite so hard they DRAW BLOOD!? What is this, lunch?" So yeah. It made me question it for a few minutes until I realized I'd punch a guy in the face if he made my lip bleed. Fanfiction kisses are ridiculous.

Kissing is can be rock-your-socks-off unbelievable if you're with someone you really dig, neither of you are feeling awkward in the moment, and you're both kind of turned on already. Though it probably helps if you have a thing for lips and/or are very tactile.

Also re: the air...because of allergies I'm almost always slightly congested, so there's no way I can breathe through my nose enough to make up for the fact that my heart is racing with the kiss and I NEED AIR.

It's totally cool to A) be completely underwhelmed at first and B) not have your first kiss until you're eighteen. So don't stress; you're probably not doing anything egregiously "wrong". It gets better with the right person/circumstances, or with just a little more experience. Or it could be that kissing just isn't your end-all be-all. Either way, it's just going to take time to figure that out.

tl;dr: If I were you, I definitely would not base my expectations off fanfiction - the writers tend to exaggerate (occasionally due to their own inexperience), thus leaving you almost always disappointed with the RL version. :P

RE: the breathing thing... When my BF initiates, if it's a really intense kiss I usually end up not breathing simply because I get too flustered? As in, holding my breath cos it feels good and I don't know what else to do! Or I keep breathing in, but find it impossible to breathe out again, so have to push him away for that reason.

Maybe it depends on how much on the receiving end you are, and on your personality... And I kinda took it for granted as normal, but reading the other comments I'm starting to think I'm actually kinda lucky. XD

You aren't pathetic! I recommend lots of practice and finding someone you like long enough and well enough to really enjoy the fuck out of kissing. Then fanfic will seem like the shoddy alternative ;)

Since when is having your first kiss at 18 "pathetic?" More people would consider the fact that people read fanfiction is "pathetic." Yet people still read it, and there are people that don't get kissed.

Oh man, this will probably be me in several weeks. Almost 19 and I turned down a kiss because I was nervous that I might do it wrong. But yeah, fanfiction =/= real life, and it's definitely not pathetic to get your first kiss at 18.
