I actually hate Menma. I just wanted to strangle her in the first half of the episode until they revealed that she was, you know, dead.

She's gotten a bit better, but I still really can't stand her.

I honestly don't care about her.

Then again, I don't like any of the characters, especially Anaru.

But I don't think she's a Mary Sue.

*blinks*

And SHE'S A VIRGIN, as the show will tell you multiple times.

Yep. And she's the Ms. Fanservice Tsundere of the show.

She even has a subplot about her virginity.

- entire plot revolves around her (death) and granting her wish
- two of the more attractive main guy characters in love (obsessed?) with her
- characteristics include being incredibly selfless / self-sacrificing / generous / always thinking about others

I think it was just that scene in ep6 where Jintan started yelling at Menma for thinking too much about others and not enough about herself. I'm not saying it's wrong to be selfless or to think about others, just that I feel her character was made out to be this noble, generous and self-sacrificing saint, and therefore unrealistic. It just made me do a mental headdesk, because, COME ON, nobody is that wonderful and perfect.

I don't understand how number three you listed is a mary-sueish. So what if a character is giving and generous and all? All three combined (all three listed) sort of makes sense though.

I didn't much like her either, OP. And I'm probably the only person here who doesn't think this anime is as good as everyone else claims it is.

The animation is gorgeous, but I think it's trying too hard to make you cry.

well, i think this is a pretty blatant misuse of the word "mary-sue"?

i mean, everyone LOOOOVES MENMA because she's their dead childhood friend? i get the impression that things would be pretty much the same way if it had been anaru or jinta or anyone else. but it was menma who died, and it affected all of their lives in a big way.

personally, i find her antics really charming (her little stunt with the puppets when she tried to cheer up jinta was adorable), but ymmv i guess. i really don't think you can call her a mary-sue though. she's not exactly perfect, seeing as she's essentially still a child? that's why a lot of people find her annoying...

More than a Mary Sue, I'd call her a moeblob. A very deliberate one

I don't give a crap about whether a character has qualities that fandom automatically rejects or not. All that matters is whether she's interesting or not.
