I've been pleasantly surprised by it as well! I guess since it's still Anno at the wheel, it can't depart TOO much from the Eva spirit, even if the plot is different. Let's both keep our fingers crossed that the finale will be good!

Mari isn't a bad character, but she seems like she doesn't fit into the show very well. Of course, this is just because I've been watching NGE since the nineties, probably, so a more typical over-the-top super robot character just doesn't seem to mesh well with the characters I already know. I do know that GAINAX is trying to take the series a different route this time and the characters aren't all exactly the same as their original series incarnations, so I'll give it a chance.

(TBH, I only really hated her at first because she had so much more battle screentime than Asuka and Asuka's my favorite pilot. And using HER Eva, too! Arghh)

Yes, that was my issue with her too. She's replacing Asuka. =(

That was the intention concerning Mari by the authors. I remember someplace, that the authors mentioned that Mari was supposed to be unfitting for EVA, being the only character that does not come out of Anno's mind.

I personally trust GAINAX in that they'll provide a good explanation for her character. Because so far? Rebuild is bloody awesome.

That, and some hotblood in a midst of emo isn't that bad at all.

I really love Rebuild mostly because it's such a metafictive turn for the series to take - it seems specifically designed to play with the tropes of the Giant Robot show after the first Evangelion deconstructed them, and I kind of love that. I'm really looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Not really sure why this is a secret, but either way Mari is awful and you should feel awful.

Kind of hard to judge that this early in the game though, isn't it? We barely know anything about her at all, and given the heavy emphasis on which pilots are able to synch with which Evas, there's got to be some strong backstory there.

I was skeptical at first, but I'm holding out. I really don't think Anno or Gainax would toss in an underdeveloped and throwaway character into a series already considered a masterpiece.

Honestly now, she knows a ~super special secret code~ that makes the Evas turn extra-badass, her personal Eva has four legs, she's a ~smart and beautiful transfer student~ with huge boobs, and (judging from her lines so far) if/when they do decide to give her a personality we can pretty safely assume that she's going to be an excessively eccentric / special snowflake kind of character.
She's a goddamn mary sue and she doesn't belong in the franchise.

I think that was more of a detriment than anything else. I'm so glad that super ugly Eva lasted only like five minutes, I think I puked when I saw the initial designs for that thing

Not really, they're kind of a normal size. I do agree her outfit is like, fanboy fetish material, but she has an average rack (I can't say the same about any fanart of her, though)

For me, if she ends up having the depth we've come to expect from characters in this series, that's all good. Matter of opinion, I suppose.

That code does make me wonder though. "The Beast," really? Doesn't sound much like a secret code. If we don't get some kind of backstory regarding why that code even exists, I'm going to be disappointed.

I kind of want this series just to DIE already. I mean seriously, the show is FIFTEEN YEARS OLD. I am near 30, and I watched this show in my early teens. It's very fucking weird to me it's still around, but....I guess I shouldn't be surprised because Gainax loves money. I mean, they were producing Evangelion ero games for years. And spin-offs where all the characters are Japanese schoolgirls. And stupid shit like that. I was just kinda hoping all of that would taper off eventually. Sigh.

I have given these a chance and while they're ok, I'd rather the series just be left as it is and NEW stuff be created. Getting sick of re-imaginings of things.

What are your thoughts on Star Trek and Doctor Who? ;P
