It's times like this when I really feel like a lot of people who "didn't get" the movie didn't get it because they're never had emotional/mental issues (or they don't know someone who has).

Speaking as someone who suffers from depression and self-injury, I definitely found the movie empowering and I definitely connected with it.

[identity profile] followthemoth.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Fellow self-harmer/sufferer of depression who agrees, anon.

[identity profile] jewelia13.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
...thirded. Er, seconded. I used to get myself through high school (I was depressed and constantly bullied) by imagining fantastical stories as I walked to/from school.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
OP, are you me? Just a couple years ago, my physical disease was treated as a mental illness and I was hospitalized for it.

[identity profile] wolfie.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Being told you have something you don't is a terrible experience to begin with. Dealt with something like this personally myself. The self-doubt in itself is ridiculous.

As for me, I'm glad when people can find power in whatever they can; screw others who would tell you what they think it means.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
you got problems

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck you.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
you're so full of love, aren't you?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
And so do you, apparently.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
That was Op's POINT, moron

[identity profile] daniela-lynx.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
NOBODY has the right to tell you something is not empowering if you find power in it.

I think I need to see this movie.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was a great movie, but I think it had strengths that went unacknowledged because people were so busy being indignant. There was definitely a universality and a kind of strength to the idea of escaping and personal empowerment and stuff, it was just that it was handled...kinda badly. Still, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 01:30 am (UTC)(link)

This, exactly.

The movie definitely has flaws, but it genuinely tried to do good things and if it were not for movies that TRIED to do good things, no better movies could be made.

This is the first thing that has made me want to see this movie, cause the same thing happened to me. If not for my fantasy worlds, I'm not sure I would have survived.

And I once made a secret about it, and got "cool story bro"'d. Sigh.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think people would be saying it's offensive and unrealistic if it had an all-male cast.

That says volumes.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
actually I think most people would think it's even more offensive and un realistic if it had an all male cast

sorry but guys doing stripper moves while wearing short shorts are still not acceptable these days

You're not the only one who feels that way, OP. I was so surprised when I heard people complaining about how this movie was nothing but a male wank fantasy. When I watched this movie, all I could think that those fight/adventure scenes were all the fantasies I had had as a little girl put on screen.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
That is the one thing that interested me about the commentary surrounding the movie. I haven't seen it, but there was a lot of talk about how the girls' fantasy worlds were unrealistic and nobody would imagine themselves being that sexy. When I was having really bad days, my escapism would often involve me being sexy, athletic, dressed impractically, etc., and I wasn't even in nearly as bad a situation as these girls were. So while it's certainly problematic given the history of womens' depictions in film I don't think it's as out-there as people might think it is.

/cool story bro

[identity profile] lady-wormtongue.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think it was Jena Malone who said something like that in an interview, about women's fantasies about themselves. She was like, "In my personal fantasies, I'm definitely not imagining myself in sweatpants!" I loved that.

Haha, right? In the fantasies I had about myself as a kid (and still occasionally have now), I was like super hot and wore sexy red dresses all the time and had really beautiful long hair. And I rescued damsels in distress, and wore live snakes and birds as accessories. And I could summon bees. And my best friend was a tree.

... So yeah. I have a hard time believing that people have a hard time believing that any girl would fantasize about being sexy and kicking ass.

I'm really happy for you, OP. <3

I haven't actually seen the movie (yet), but if it helps you, that's all that matters. <3

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Luckily for me, I never went through that experience, but I suffered from clinical depression for years and wasn't diagnostised until a few months ago. If it hadn't been for the fantasy word I built to escape my reality I probably would have killed myself.

This movie felt so much like the fantasies I built for myself. The ass-kicking, the camaderie and, heck, even the sexy outfits were all in my fantasies. If I made a movie about my high school years, about half of it would have been in a fantasy world much like Baby Doll's. And if the prevalence of hooker!AUs in fandom is anything to go by, people seem to find that particular fantasy cathartic for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree so much. During some of the roughest periods of the last few years, I'd take my iPod, go on long, rambling walks and envision scenarios with every different song that came on. Most of the time I was an ass-kicking hot, intelligent, street-smart woman haha! Which is also why I think the addition of the monumental soundtrack is so great, it just reminds me of those songs playing while the fantasy "played out" in my head.

I think Synder was really on to something here, but people aren't prepared to look past what they're given at face value. It took me a while to finally reach the conclusion above, but when it did, I appreciated the movie so much more.
