That is the one thing that interested me about the commentary surrounding the movie. I haven't seen it, but there was a lot of talk about how the girls' fantasy worlds were unrealistic and nobody would imagine themselves being that sexy. When I was having really bad days, my escapism would often involve me being sexy, athletic, dressed impractically, etc., and I wasn't even in nearly as bad a situation as these girls were. So while it's certainly problematic given the history of womens' depictions in film I don't think it's as out-there as people might think it is.

I think it was Jena Malone who said something like that in an interview, about women's fantasies about themselves. She was like, "In my personal fantasies, I'm definitely not imagining myself in sweatpants!" I loved that.

Granted, I think there's some criticism here about internalizing a very male-gazey idea of what is sexy and what is beautiful, but that has more to do with the fantasy itself and less to do with the movie, you know what I mean?

This. There is a reason girls would imagine themselves like this and it's usually because they are told that looking sexy is the only way they could be worthwhile. Honestly, hearing that everyone shares and endorses these kind of fantasies only makes me more depressed.

Haha, right? In the fantasies I had about myself as a kid (and still occasionally have now), I was like super hot and wore sexy red dresses all the time and had really beautiful long hair. And I rescued damsels in distress, and wore live snakes and birds as accessories. And I could summon bees. And my best friend was a tree.

... So yeah. I have a hard time believing that people have a hard time believing that any girl would fantasize about being sexy and kicking ass.

After reading your response, I think some of the criticism of the movie's depiction of girls' fantasies may come from how obvious/trite/non-specific they seem to be? Because I would totally be more into watching SP if they had a girl wearing live snakes and birds and summoning bees in the trailer, regardless of sexiness factor.

Less the sexy kickass fantasy (because hell yeah, that's a popular fantasy) and more the 'what girl's fantasy would involve stripping and a dreary, wretched existence?'
