The dubcon scenes were "do not know if I want" for me.

The scene where Daenerys takes control of the situation? Oh god, want so much.

That first (wedding night) scene was definitely non-con, though, not dub con in the show. In the books, it was dub con because of the power imbalance, although Drogo was at least written as caring very much whether or not she said yes. But in the TV series they made it straight up non-con, which really grossed me out.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, if hot non-con does it for ya, this source certainly can. *joins you in the non-con kink camp*

[identity profile] greenhoodloxley.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
How come that isn't a summer camp we can go to? HOW COME?

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
The campfire songs would be WEIRD. :D

[identity profile] azaelers.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's double frustrating because in the books, Drogo made their first time gentle and enjoyable. My friend is watching the series but hasn't read the books, and she's still pissed at him.

Sigh. D,:

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I hated about it too. I've got a non-con kink myself, but I love Dany and Drogo's relationship in the book, so their wedding night in the show ticked me off and made me more uncomfortable than anything, especially considering yeah, people who haven't read them will probably hate Drogo for the rest of the series.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not really hate him, but....it just makes it...confusing? I mean we basically see him forcing himself on her first episode, and now they're like the lovey-dovey "let's take over the world and have babies" übercouple. I think in the TV-verse, it's just confusing character-development wise.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
It was a cop-out in the book, or just poor writing.

1. Dany wants none of it, Drogo persuades her and seduces her and Dany loves it.
2. Drogo is rubbish at sex now he doesn't have to make an effort, Dany hates it.
3. Dany learns how to be good at sex and makes Drogo have better sex wit her.

The HBO progression makes more sense. I think GRRM or his editors just didn't want to have a rape so early on in the book since it really cuts sales. Rapes after the mid-point of a novel do not affect sales in the same way.

seeeeeeeeeriously

it's not cool, but in the end I kind of got why they did it. Even though Drogo was surprisingly gentle and treated her delicately and gave her a chance to say no, she was still sold to him. I guess they thought it seemed ~too easy and put in that little sexual-confidence arc with the lessons and stuff as yet another way to get into her Becoming A Queen story, to simply & visually have her starting to come out on top.

(I'm hoping that's their reasoning. I really am)

[identity profile] karate0kat.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think that scene helped establish that Drogo isn't a complete monster and does care at least a little.

However, something I never see mentioned when this is brought up is that in Dany's next chapter she describes how he fucks her every night whether she wants it or not and she's happy he likes taking her from behind so that she can muffle her tears and cries of pain in the pillow. And she also thinks about killing herself. Things get better, but just because their first night together was better in the book, that doesn't mean the general start of their relationship wasn't still awful for Dany.

I'm not trying to be a hater. Out of all the couples on the TV show I love them the most (in large part because Jason Momoa is hnnnnnnggggggggg and I'm horribly shallow sometimes). But they were hardly bunnies and kittens in the book.

THIS. When I first read GoT and got to that scene, I was like, "Well this is rather nice. Tasteful cut to black. Work in some humanizing character development." And then when she got another chapter, my face changed to DDDDDD8.

[identity profile] quorothorn.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
That was pretty much my reaction as well. If I'm not misremembering, I actually backpedaled to the last Daenerys PoV to sort of go "did I miss something?".

My guess is Drogo figured she'd be OK after the first time. NICE MISCALCULATION THERE, CHUMLEY.

(They really do end up with one of the sweeter relationships in the books, though, IMO.)

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I remember that. I felt so sad for her. I kind of wished they showed her dreams (hers and Bran's) and that her connection to the dragon eggs are stronger than they seem to portray in the series.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I had a debate with someone about those scenes, actually. My interpretation when I read those was that her tears and pain were not related to the sex, but were exacerbated by it. It says that she was riding all day and (as someone not used to that) had saddlesores like WHOA. THAT was why she wanted to kill herself -- she didn't know how much more of the constant riding she could take. The sex didn't help -- she probably would have preferred to spend the evenings quietly in a bath, and instead she had to engage in vigorous sex with Drogo. But it wasn't the intercourse that was making her cry but the pain from riding. It later says that after her blisters healed, she got stronger and was happier.

This is just my interpretation, but the progression of Dany & Drogo's relationship only makes sense to me if Dany was not consenting in a "I really want to be intimate but I'm way too tired and in pain right now" sense. The fact that Drogo doesn't respect that is still really icky and the fact that Dany apparently doesn't think she can say no to him and take a break from sex for a while is also really icky, but I don't think just because she's crying during sex means that the dubcon suddenly turned into noncon. My interpretation is that she enjoyed the sex for the intimacy, but hated it for the physical exertion.

Probably an unpopular interpretation -- multiple people took offense at my saying this.

[identity profile] pincerna.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
uh but if she doesn't want to have sex with him for whatever reason then it's non-con, not dub-con

idc if she would have consented if she hadn't been tired and sore, the sex was p obviously non-consensual

do you see why people might take offense, you are basically saying that despite dany not consenting, it wasn't rape bc in a different situation she might have consented

do you not see how that fails to make sense

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I apologize if my comment above made it seem that she didn't consent. I'm saying her consent was conflicted and not a black-and-white thing (therefore dubcon). My interpretation is that she wanted to have sex with him for certain reasons (intimacy...?) and at the same time did not want to have sex with him for other reasons (the pain/fatigue). The thing I disagree with is that crying automatically means she did not consent (noncon). I don't think that's true.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got to be honest, I would take offense to this too. Regardless of whether the pain was from sex or riding a horse so often, the fact remains that Drogo forced himself on her at times when she did not want to have sex with him, no matter what her reasons were. That, to me, immediately makes it non-con.

That's pretty much the one big thing they did different in the series than in the books that's pissed me off so far. That scene was lovely in the books, with Drogo, this big macho warlord guy, taking the time to be gentle and comforting to her so she enjoyed it. Then bam! In the tv series she's crying and he pushes her down and cutaway. It makes their relationship in the series that side of icky if you've never read the books.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't get this sentiment. It's even worse in the book. Especially if you actually read her next chapter about Drogo fucking her each night whether she wants it or not. Being gentle and making sure "she enjoyed it" doesn't change the fact that he was still raping her and continued to do so after their wedding night :/

[identity profile] katamanda.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
tbh that slipped my mind when I wrote that, been a while since I read GoT. Hrrrm.

I did find the wedding night scene touching, even with what happened after. I think it was that it showed there was more to Drogo's character than what he first appeared, not just to the audience but to Dany, that side she drew out of him later on when they grew to truly love each other. He didn't have to be gentle to her, but he was.

It's not ideal no, but the fact he was even kind to her at all that first time feels like a detail they shouldn't have gotten rid of :/

(Anonymous) 2011-06-13 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I know a lot of people read that scene this way, but idk, to me it felt like the author copped out and turned the scene into "rape that gets you off is okay". (IIRC, Dany had no actual assurance that he would stop if she asked -- there was just some throwaway line about her looking at him and somehow knowing that he would.)

(Anonymous) 2011-06-13 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Agree so fucking much. To make matters more fucked up: I hated the scene in the book, which was theoretically supposed to be more consensual, but the rape-y version on screen? Hot as hell.
