Yeaaaaah I've had nightmares like this and seeing it happen on a show I love weirded me out like whoa. I was pretty amazed by Amy immediately feeling super-protective and loving of the baby too, if I had a surprise!baby I'd feel more violated and weirded out by it than anything.

+1

[identity profile] shukivengeance.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, I was very disappointed by how it was handled, but I suppose those sorts of things happen when a man writes it. My guess is Moffat was just unable to empathize with how a woman would feel in that situation because it's obviously something he'll never have had to face or even worry about in life.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeaaah I guess he can say LOL IT'S A KID'S SHOW we can't have people moping about being worried/scarred for life if they're main characters or they'll hold up the plot, but... it was pretty horrifying to imagine this situation, let alone live through. And I don't even think you have to be female to imagine it - I'd assume if he'd considered it for more than 'how do I get a baby in this plot here' and considered the implications for Amy, he could see it was a pretty horrifying experience to undergo and not just something you can simply bounce back from.

I guess you could make a case at how Amy had been pregnant in that one episode of season 5 and she had thought she was pregnant at the start of season 6, so she could've had some chance to get used to the idea of being pregnant, but I imagine being pregnant and delivering a baby are two very seperate things.

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't a surprise!baby, though. She KNEW she was pregnant, at least she says so herself in the first episode. I believe she was kidnapped after this happened (somewhere during the first minutes of the second episode). And they do point out that the baby's conception happened in the TARDIS, at some point, so it wasn't like she was unknowing.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It really, really was a surprise!baby imo. Yes, at one point she correctly assumed she was pregnant, but it was apparently never confirmed and said she was mistaken (or something, they really glossed over this so quickly which confused me anyhow - what a thing to gloss over), and to go from believing you're in the first stages of pregnancy to pushing out a baby after 8, 9 months of believing you're not pregnant really is a surprise!baby.

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's not on screen, but I doubt that the real Amy (aka, not the flesh avatar) doesn't know she's pregnant. Unless of course, she was kept asleep/whatever during that time. Which, again, taking in account the way real Amy's memories bleed into the flesh's (woman in the walls, anyone?) makes me thing that at least part of her knew where she was and was aware of the situation.

If it had her consent, oh, I doubt it very much. But again, if she was restrained for all these months, I'd think she'd develop a bond with the baby.

And that's my opinion. Because she sounds pretty sure she's pregnant in the end of the first episode, leading me to believe that her kidnapping took place somewhere around there, and that her flesh self doesn't have that memory.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's really pretty vague, I can see your point, but I personally think she's probably kept unaware of her real self (since the flashes of 'reality' flashing in her flesh self kind of indicate she believes she is the flesh copy - but she had no clue what the woman in the walls was, or the fact that she wasn't there at the Doctor's at all?). Either way, when she 'woke up' in her real body and looked down, you could see she was definitely surprised she was pregnant.

I'm so confused when the kidnapping took place - she first sees the woman in the wall in the first or second episode, but i believe the doctor said something about her being taken even before the first episode? To be honest I can't really remember all that clearly.

I really hope Moffat clears that up, but... I'm doubtful he'll want to get more into this incubator-esque storyline than is necessary, lol.

If she wasn't kidnapped before the first episode, the only other possible time would be the three months they were "on the run" from Canton. She first saw the Eye Patch Lady (Madame Kovarian) in Day of the Moon, so she was already being projected into a flesh avatar, so it really WAS her (which, creepily perfect way to kidnap someone), because other than solving the problem of them not looking for her, they also don't have to worry about her fighting the imprisonment.

The Doctor seems to think she was kidnapped before America though. But in any case it was either inbetween episodes 1 & 2, or between the Christmas special and the series premiere.

[identity profile] winninghearts.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
the flesh avatar had Amy's consciousness in it, though. That was Amy.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, to be fair, we see her like what...a month later? She could have bonded by then, off-screen. And from what I hear your hormones do sort of "nudge" you into liking the kid after birth?

However, the whole coma-pregnancy? Super. Fucking.Creepy.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Really, it was a month? Huh, that makes sense actually! I'd just assumed they'd just let her give birth and then take the baby away asap since they knew the Doctor was coming for them.

Yeah, I heard that too, the mommy!hormones, but I've personally never experienced that. I suppose that makes sense, but it'd still be more than a little unnerving to suddenly have a child, even if it's wanted (which it's clear it is).

Yeaaaah coma-pregnancy will never not be creepy. I thought Donna got the worst new!companion ending, but this is just... I guess we'll see what happens next. Maybe Amy, Rory and Melody (although I don't see Melody growing up with them) will have a good!ending to make up for all this bullshit, they certainly deserve it.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think it was a month unless my mind retconned it to make it less creepy? Will need to rewatch...

And yeah, I do hope for their happy ending...

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I have to be honest, I really wasn't paying too much attention since between Rory being Roman!badass in front of cybermen and Doctor recruiting way too many people in about 10 mins I totally lost track of what was going on. My bad. :( But it makes sense, I mean, you can't raise an army in an hour.

The thing is though, to me it's clear River has not had a happy childhood, so it's doubtful Amy and Rory will be able to take Melody home with them even if they do leave... and now that they are attached to her, not bringing Melody home with them would pretty much kill them. It's almost doomed from the start, really. But idk maybe the writers can timey-wimey it.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
AS long as it's not just explained as "timey-wimey". They've been doing a lot of that. I want some answer, dammit!

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
It would be fitting though - imo River's story has always been handwaved as 'oh, it's timey-wimey' - I mean, how do you even travel back in someone's timeline by accident? Does she just grow up time-backwards? Surely at some point they must coincide. It just seems like one big coincidence after another, so it would be fitting that this entire River season be timey-wimey.

But yeah, I don't really approve of the writing either (apart from the terrifying incubator plot). Everything just fits together because it fits together and it all seems rather contrived and mysterious for the sake of being mysterious.

Eye-patch lady says to Blue dude (can't remember names atm, sorry) that it's been a month already and the doctor hasn't shown up yet. They clearly aren't talking about when they kidnapped Amy since that had to have been before she started showing. So it's gotta be a month since birth.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Having given it some thought, I think I'd probably be protective of the baby in that situation too - because, you know, even if I was pissed off with the people responsible for the whole mess, the baby is innocent, and no-one else is going to be loving towards it any time soon.

I do wish it hadn't played out as it did, though - I'm with some of the other people in this thread, I don't think Moffat knew just how horrifying that reveal was. It didn't bother me all that much, but I was watching it with a friend and she was terrified.
