IA. It's really fucking creepy and awful how she had no choice in the matter. Unless she knew she was pregnant before and decided to keep it, but from her reaction I'm not sure that's the case. I really hope they deal with the fallout, mentally and emotionally.

I don't think I have ever seen sci-fi deal well with pregnancy. Either they get no choice, or they're experimented on, or it's a forced pregnancy by an alien/demon/whatever even if there's no sex involved, or it's a goddamn messiah baby (that usually comes hand in hand with no choice). Sci-fi and pregnancy do not mix well. Ever.

Yeaaaaah I've had nightmares like this and seeing it happen on a show I love weirded me out like whoa. I was pretty amazed by Amy immediately feeling super-protective and loving of the baby too, if I had a surprise!baby I'd feel more violated and weirded out by it than anything.

Word.

And yet in the next episode she's walking around, perfectly fine and back to her old self (if obviously worried for her baby). I really hoped Moffat wouldn't downplay the trauma of her having to go through such a thing on her own but it seems finding out about magic baby Melody was more important. Not that it wasn't - it just would have been nice to have a scene between Amy and Rory (or even the Doctor) where she breaks down about it.

I think it all depends on when Amy was actually kidnapped. The entire season, we only see the Flesh avatar's reaction to anything. And obviously, some things are gonna be skewed in the memory there. For all we know, Amy's reaction there in that scene was because she'd been kidnapped and someone was looking at her through a small window like she was some kind of incubator.

Truth is, all we know is that she was kidnapped sometime after she conceived and before she started to show (a lot). Amy and especially Rory aren't stupid. Especially Rory, who is a nurse. Chances are high she ended up pregnant because she wanted a kid. Those two don't strike me as the kind who'd have unprotected sex unless they were okay with the possibility. Unless there's some broken condom in there.

So, while I get the sentiment, at the same time... I feel we don't know enough about the situation to say she had no choice as it could easily swing the other way.

It never occurred to me that she'd want to terminate it, I guess because of how she was discussing it with the Doctor about it having a time-head or whatever, she didn't seem to not want it (even if it did have a time-head).

But I think you've still hit the nail on my utter horror reaction to that scene. Not necessarily related to termination of the pregnancy specifically, but that and any and all of the rest involved in growing a woman's pregnancy while she's asleep... AAAAUGHGGHHHHH.

Not sure if the Moff realized how visceral that scene could be. I hope not, because what a thing to put in a family show D:

You know what, though. She and Rory both seemed very happy to retrieve their offspring. If we backtrack to them perhaps being happy about being pregnant together, after Rory overhears Amy's fears to the Doctor... Wouldn't there have been some sad moment where Amy suddenly thinks she's miscarried or something. "I thought I was but I was wrong" is a pretty offhand brush-off of it all.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I hate this WHOLE fucking story line so god damned much. There is NOTHING about it that doesn't make me want to kick Stephen Moffat in the balls. What the fucking fuck is he thinking?

Oh, and the baby is River, what a shock... [rolls eyes] Is that supposed to make us feel better about Amy being held prisoner for several months and being treated as nothing more than a fucking incubator? Because it really. Fucking. Doesn't. Granted, part of that is that I don't really like River much anyway, but I'd hope that even her ardent fans don't find the ends (River was born!) justify the means. Oh, and for the record: Having one of the main villains be female doesn't make it any less fucked up, either.

Please let this goddamn story line end soon and let us get back to a show that's fun, not one that's so incredibly fucked up I can barely stand to watch it.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's horrible, yes, but I don't think that necessarily makes it a bad story line.

(Re. Amy seemingly ok about it: I imagine so much was going on that Amy or Rory hasn't had a chance to fully think about what happened...)

Hm, I was a bit squicked by a similar plotline in Fringe. Well, not so much squicked as incredulous. So, I don't know if it was because it was the second time round or because the general tone of the show made it more easy to suspend my disbelief and not focus on the implications, but I was less disturbed. But I definitely thought about it.

Dear god, yes, agreed.

I ranted (in my person LJ) about how I found that whole plotline very sexist/misogynistic and stupid, and got back "...how's it sexist?" *headdesk*

I hate Moffat, don't like the current storyline much and I especially didn't like the most recent episode, and the Amy thing does quick me on a personal basis, but that's because I am afraid of pregnancy myself.

However, I do feel the need to point out that Amy did discuss the possibility of having a baby before, early on in the season. Her concern was not that she might not want one, but for the consequences being conceived in the TARDIS might have for the child (and turns out, she had reason to be worried). That implies to me that she felt that if she was pregnant, she'd intended on keeping the child.

Really, any panicky birth scene like this squicks me - not even because of the birth, but because it feels like some weird kind of emotional torture-porn, where it's all about watching the woman scream and suffer and become frantic. And the lack of choice behind it - even if she wanted the baby, she had only just found out about it when she was kidnapped and had gone from newly-pregnant to in labor - just makes it worse.

Also because sci-fi pregnancies almost never give the woman a choice and make her a huge victim and I hate them in general and I was so hoping that Doctor Who wouldn't go there because it's a family show. Guess I was wrong. :(

Yes, we get it, you're pro-abortion.

[identity profile] ditdatdo.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I have no actual problem with the storyline. The storyline was creepy and horrible, yes, but if it'd been dealt with right, it could've also been fascinating to watch. As it was, by glossing over all of the trauma of coming to terms with being pregnant whilst giving birth, then the actual birth and the period of time immediately after, it was just shit. To make matters worse, even once the episode got going, she seemed to be suffering no real lingering effects of what she'd been through, beyond not wanting her baby taken away.

I get that it was a busy episode with a lot to fit in, but Moffat totally could've added on at least five minutes devoted to that month or so he just skipped past. That might've gone some way to make that mess better.

...am I the only one who saw Amy as really damaged after all that's happened to her, this being one of the last straws and one that impacted her deeply? It could've been spelled out clearer, I wanted them to say it out loud, but I thought it was there. Maybe it's my brain trying to headcanon everything into place, idk.
