Hm, I was a bit squicked by a similar plotline in Fringe. Well, not so much squicked as incredulous. So, I don't know if it was because it was the second time round or because the general tone of the show made it more easy to suspend my disbelief and not focus on the implications, but I was less disturbed. But I definitely thought about it.

Hahaha omg, that Fringe episode was mad. I couldn't even think of the non-consent issues of using Olivia's body because I was still flailing in confusion and horror whenever I thought about it for weeks after.

But IMO that situation was even worse because Olivia was forced to bear a child even though she had a disease which meant the pregnancy was almost guaranteed to kill her. Even the anti-choice activists mostly agree that termination to save the mother's life is okay.

Hm, as I understood it, the point of forcing her to have the baby was that both would survive, so I guess she was in less danger than if she had decided to go through with the pregnancy. Except she didn't know that, if that's what you meant?

But yeah, the lack of choice... and even if she had definitely wanted it, the thought of suddenly having to care for a child without, well, at least a few months' time to mentally adjust sounded especially terrifying to me.

Well, except it was an entirely experimental 'treatment' for her disease so there was no promises that it would work, and she was being forced to undertake it against her will and without being informed of the purpose and/or likelihood of success. The betrayal of the doctors in her case feels more horrible to me than, say, in Amy's situation, where at least the villains have obviously contrary motives to the victim. If that makes sense ;)

Oh man. I think about that Fringe episode and I just... I laugh. "Oh you're pregnant? Here have baby NOW!" Hahaha... it's horrible, but it's also so absurd. I miss that show.

I wish I could understand why writers of sci-fi/fantasy programs feel a need to include a baby at some point in their shows. Angel, Fringe, Doctor Who, Heroes, etc.. It's a cliche story that has been done before again and again. And you would think the fact that having a plot line of a vampire with a soul who is battling an evil as literal Hell law firm, a mad scientist and his goal to save his universe and a parallel one from doom, a time and space traveling alien who everyone either worships or fears and a planet full of people with superpowers battling secret organizations would be enough for a bucket full of new and original stories.

So, why the baby plot line?
