I've always been sort of between the two. I would flat out refuse to assimilate, and governments can be fucking terrifying about things that are different, and large groups of people are never inherently good (though individuals can be), so in a lot of ways I'm closer to taking Magneto's side. But there's no need to speed up the process of extinction and actively kill humans, which brings me closer to Xavier's. Meh.

Evolution is NOT like that. It doesn't work this way. The "science" in the xverse, even for "suspension of disbelief" standards is *extremely* wrong. I couldn't even enjoy the film because of this, and I have only a basic understanding of evolution.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's not, but it is the way the "science" of the X-Men movieverse is presented, therefore that's the way "science" works in that universe. Sci-fi never actually gets science right. You have to roll with it or get out of the genre.

[identity profile] june-miller.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I can get past that. When Xavier talked about Neanderthals and Homo-Sapien I almost cringed at the ignorance. People who don't know better will come out of that film thinking that bullshit is true.

[identity profile] tawabids.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
God yes! Did he actually say neanderthals were "less evolved" than early Homo sapiens sapiens? I WANTED TO PUNCH A BITCH. That doesn't make sense. Evolutionary change =/= objective progress. That's the exact argument the 19th C. rascists use to justify treating non-white races as lesser humans. I couldn't take any of his arguments against Magneto seriously after that. GTFO OF MY SCIENCE, XAVIER.

Yes, he did. Damn hollywood science. Generally I don't care about things, but for fictional/fantasy film in which Evolution (Fantasy Evolution, but still) is one of the main themes, together with discussion about prejudice and social rights, I can't help but feel bothered by it.

That doesn't make sense. Evolutionary change =/= objective progress. That's the exact argument the 19th C. rascists use to justify treating non-white races as lesser humans.

Jesus, yes. Would it cost them much to do some research with a person with only basic knowledge about Evolution? It could fit the film, and even allow some greater discussions.

[identity profile] tawabids.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, if it was some dude in a chick flick using his professorship to pick up chicks I wouldn't care, but the film is ABOUT the competition between sub-species in a diverging population, IT IS DIRECTLY RELEVANT TO THE ENTIRE PLOT whether or not Xavier gets his terminology right.

You see what you've done, film, you've made me capslock rage. You're just lucky you kept distracting me with Michael Fassbender's neck. Mmmm.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
in spite of ruining my enjoyment of the film and coming off as ignorant... what would be the correct terminology? i genuinely want to know, it's been a while since i've learnt about evolution at school and my grasp of the english language can be kind of hazy (esl nonny here) so i didn't quite get what objective process means. tried googling it even, but alas

tl;dr just want to know what to you is glaringly obvious (i get the part about "less evolved" and racist arguments though, that's just... yeah, no, what even-)

[identity profile] tawabids.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh don't worry, I just meant that there's no such thing as "more evolved" or "less evolved" or "evolving towards" (eg, we wouldn't say the Australopithecines, if they are our ancestors, were "proto-human" because every species, in its proper era and environment, is at its 'peak' - no species in evolution is aiming towards a future species). So a biology professor obviously wouldn't use terminology like 'less evolved'.

By "objective" I meant that there isn't a separate criteria for measuring how 'evolved' a species is - we don't say "neanderthals were more evolved that Australopithecine because they came later in time". If evolution had 'progress' or 'goals' there would need to be some outside force thinking up those goals. Eg, If you believe that evolution exists TO produce humans as an end result than you could say 'neanderthals are more evolved than Australopithecine, but most scientists of evolution don't believe that. We believe evolution can't know the future, it is a process that can only adapt to the current environment it is in.

It sounds like you understand the concepts pretty well, though ;) your English is great.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-11 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
oh yeah, makes sense. thank you for explaining it so patiently! a pretty weird mistake to make in a movie that leans so heavily on evolution... but then again, as also said before, this is hollywood :X

[identity profile] tawabids.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hollywood's lucky. I wish I had a job where I got away with making up facts! :D
ext_6866: (Sigh. Monet.)

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I think what makes it all the more frustrating is evolution as a subject is so intentionally mangled in the real world and the facts intentionally not taught. It's not like people don't actually say on TV things like "If evolution were real how come monkeys don't talk yet?" Of course, X-Men's playing fast and loose with the concepts anyway, but if they'er going to talk about real evolution in the past they could at least get that right and have Xavier talk like a person who'd studied the subject would talk.

[identity profile] tawabids.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. It's maddening because it's just not that hard to get right. It's not like he's talking the finer points quantum physics here, the concepts are easily graspable by a high school student. Yet misinformation about those concepts is what allows the creationism lobby to get away with pushing an unscientific agenda in science class :/

...one can only assume that Xavier slept his way to his professorship XD

[identity profile] liyosa.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, some scifi works get evolution a lot better than others though. Xmen is not one of those works.

To be fair, by the end of "First Class" ...

[identity profile] box-in-the-box.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
... Magneto wasn't saying, "Let's kill ALL humans," but rather, "Let's kill the specific humans who seek to do harm to us and ours." Turning the American and Soviet missiles back on the forces that launched them is a far cry from genocide. Hell, compared to what the American government has done in the name of the War On Terror, it's practically RESTRAINED.

Re: To be fair, by the end of "First Class" ...

[identity profile] june-miller.livejournal.com 2011-06-11 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
In the second and third movie he advocates genocide, yes. I would understand turning the missiles back, he was pissed off. But it wasn't only that. In First Class he said, word-by-word, he agrees with Shaw's view (to wipe out humans in a nuclear holocaust and rule the world - ridiculous) and the only reason why he didn't joinShaw's ranks was because he murdered his mother. I would even understand if he felt mutants were superior over humans, but genocide? Come on. No way I would be on Magneto's side.
