people are doing fake cuts because they want their stuff in one place and because often they crosspost it to various communities to promote it there.
of course it's annoying to click on something only to discover it's a broken link but i'd be annoyed if i had to keep my stuff strictly in some other community instead of my own writing community.

[identity profile] ginyanote.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
TOTALLY agree with everything you've said, after finding whole communities removed with my writing in them, the words lost in cyberspace somewhere since I didn't cut them to my own journal.

Also...FFFFFYES, YOUR ICON. The League of Gentlemen have been my heroes since the day they first set their eyes on Royston Vasey. <3

[identity profile] twistedbones.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
agsdad god i'd be furious if it had happened without warning, i'm totally paranoid about losing things i've written. i'm sorry. D:

aaah, hi5, they're my absolute favourite TV series in the world ever. ♥

"TOTALLY agree with everything you've said, after finding whole communities removed with my writing in them, the words lost in cyberspace somewhere since I didn't cut them to my own journal."

Wh...what?! You mean you don't keep everything you've written saved to your computer? D:

A Legue of Gentlemen icon, and Edward no less? I love you a little <3

aaah compliments about my icon everywhere today, thank youuuu.
the league are the best ever. ♥
it's nice to see that they're still people out there who know and like it.

This, precisely. I prefer having everything in one place, and I generally won't join communities that require (and for some reason I've seen a lot of that, lately) all fics to be posted directly to them instead of linked to individual LJs. I'm a paranoid soul who often makes tiny edits to a fic in the first hour or so after posting, and having to do that for several different comms would drive me batshit.

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I wanted to start a deleted fic finder comm. I hate when ppl fake cut, delete the journal for whatever reason, I search, get excited cause I think I found the fic, only to find a fake cut. Course, there are a lot of things wrong with a deleted fic finder comm which I got flamed on, er educated on in my lj here http://vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com/77423.html

[identity profile] nowherelander.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
For a second there I thought you were going to bitch about how sometimes the "fake cut" doesn't even look like a cut but is plainly a link. That bothers me sometimes. I have issues.

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I don't understand why people can't say "link to my journal" or something similar. If you're going to make a fake cut, at least put the effort into the html formatting?

/rant

(Anonymous) 2011-06-12 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I was about to comment complaining about this. What do people think a "fake cut" is? Just a link to a fic?

[identity profile] atelierlune.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really, really torn. On one hand I respect that it is the right of the fic writer to post their work where they want to post it and take it down when they want to take it down, but like you I want to keep my favorites around for future readings and I too have gotten to the point where some sort of private offline storage is the only way to ensure this if the fic did not get posted to a surviving community. I personally don't know of any comms that have been suddenly deleted, leaving writers in the lurch, but I don't doubt others when they say it happens. There's a lot of kink meme stuff in particular that only exists in that way.

[identity profile] bonitodoll.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
At the risk of outing myself as a complete newbie: what is the problem with fake cuts, exactly? I see people apologizing for them all over the place but I figured it was the same as linking something.
pantswarrior: Laguna scratches his head. (huh?)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2011-06-12 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I can tell, it is the same as linking. (Which is why *I* have a problem with it - IT'S JUST A LINK. THEY'RE AS OLD AS THE INTERNET. Not that I go all HULK SMASH when I see someone refer to a link with parentheses around it as a "fake cut", but I do roll my eyes a little.)

(Anonymous) 2011-06-13 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's meant to look like an LJ-cut. So if they don't put it in parentheses and bold it, it doesn't look like an LJ-cut and thus they are failing at faking it. At least that is what annoys me about it, idk about everyone else.

I keep all my fic on my LJ so I can pull the kill switch if necessary. Sorry, the tiny chance that someone will want to read my fic for a series with a long-dead or tiny fandom doesn't trump my real life concerns in a worst case scenario, and plenty of other people are writing in my current fandoms. If there's a fic you couldn't stand to lose from the internet, download it.

Bonus secret

(Anonymous) 2011-06-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
If you grab fanfics on http://www.flagfic.com/ you have the option of emailing them to yourself. I have a whole separate folder of my fav fanfics in epub form on my hotmail account.

Re: Bonus secret

(Anonymous) 2011-06-13 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be GREAT if it supported lj. :(
pantswarrior: Spock thinks everything is "fascinating". (fascinating)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2011-06-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreeing with the other commenter who pointed out that not only are comms just as unreliable as personal journals. (I was once in an RPG that lasted for about a year, large portions of writing related to it were on the main RPG community. One day the maintainer threw a fit and deleted everybody's work. Managed to talk her into undeleting long enough to run LJ Archive on it, but seriously not cool.)

And also the crossposting to multiple communities. For instance, I've been writing Star Trek fic. There are communities for Trek fic in general, TOS fic specifically, reboot fic specifically, mirrorverse fic specifically, Kirk/Spock specifically, Spock/McCoy specifically, Spock/Uhura specifically, OT3fic specifically, and so on. (And that's just on LJ - there's a whole other set on DW.) For a given fic, there was no freaking way I was going to post the whole thing to, say, the general Trek comm, the reboot comm, and the Kirk/Spock comm. It's tedious enough just posting it to my own journals.

Having said that, it would be nice if more authors also archived their stuff on fic archives and linked to those in the community crossposts as well, to avoid broken links if they delete their journal. It is tedious, but losing fics does suck.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand this, but personally, I find it less convenient in general when fics are posted in a comm. For one thing, if I read the fic in the author's journal, I find I'm more likely to remember who wrote it and return to that journal if I ever want to read the fic again and can't find the link. I also find it more convenient to read multi-part fics and series in the author's journal. It's usually easier to navigate between parts. I don't have anything against people posting in comms -- it's just not my preference for reading or writing fic.

Personally, I avoid posting in comms precisely because I feel I have more control over my fic if I post it in my journals. I know that my journals will probably survive just as long if not longer than most fic comms. I'm going to post in my journals regardless, so it wouldn't really matter if something happened a comm where I'd posted a fic, but if a comm was deleted, I might lose any comments that were made there.

[identity profile] trinity-destler.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
And then there are the hordes of people who get all snooty about posting directly to the community, saying they don't read fics if they aren't linked back to the author's journal because that means they're clearly new or stupid and therefore won't be any good.

Why is lj so cliquish and ridiculous?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-13 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so one of those people.

Newbs and/or people who don't care about their fic post it directly to the community. ESPECIALLY if its a comm with a poor tagging system. Like, wtf author, do you not WANT anyone to ever be able to find your fic?... /rant

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
>_____< OK, just have to say--that's not a fake cut! A fake cut is not a link that says "fake cut," it's a link disguised as a cut with parentheses and bolding! Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-14 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're that afraid of losing beloved fics to the delete button and/or system crashes, why don't you just save them to data discs or something, rather than printing them out? idgi
