Whatever works, OP. I'm glad you got out of that--I used to be in a situation somewhat similar when I was younger, and while I understand missing it [one may be living in a wonderland of terror, but I'll admit it was a little cool to have something extraordinary like in fiction actually happening in your life, even if it's just the product of your own mind; trust me, looking back I kind of miss some aspects of it, too] it's definitely for the best that you put your mental health before living in a mental Silent Hill.

Also, holy shit, are you me? I thought I was the only one who actually hallucinated Slender Man [among other things] in dark windows!

OP

I think Slendy is one of those things that is just hardwired into human brains as WRONGWRONGHOLYFUCKGETITAWAY. I mean, he started out as a couple little fake 'ghost photos' and has grown into his own damn mythos. It's something about a faceless, skeletal, not-quite-human, implacable force-of-nature spectre that gets spines crawling. And dark windows? Humans have always had scrying pools and magic mirrors. A blank expanse of sort-of-reflective glass (especially since we know that there may actually be something on the other side) is the perfect canvas for a restless, twitchy brain to fill in with all sorts of nightmares.

Gah. I totally sympathize with you, OP. I remember being absolutely certain that I saw flashes of a white figure swooping past my window in the dead of night. I took to turning on all the lights and keeping a baseball bat/silver religious things/salt close at hand when I was up at night. I slowly weaned myself off Slendy, but to this day I cannot look out a window at night and insist on having blinds over our plastic window coverings (the slat thingies) because I HATE looking outside.

Yeah, something about him is just... auuuuugh.

That makes sense, now that I think about it. Most of my friends never seem to understand when I am terrified of windows at night, though. >>

[identity profile] jukeboxhound.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I slept with the lights on the other night for this reason. YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
HIGH-FIVE, BROSEF. I totally used to do that, too! I also used to keep my computer monitor on all night, with happy music playing, because one of the ways I used to get over anxiety was to listen to Lily Allen, because a friend told me that no self-respecting monster would kill someone to Lily Allen.

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
You will understand this then, as you have a River icon.

I accidentally fell asleep re-watching Day of the Moon the other week and ended up having a horrific nightmare about the Silents. I had to put on a super long playlist of Parks and Rec to fall back asleep. And I made the dog sleep up beside my pillow (he usually gravitates there but he wasn't there yet).

I wish I had my dog when I was a teenager though, I had a horrific problem with windows at night, and he is a sweetheart, but he's also an Australian Cattle Dog who would defend me to the death if anyone ever tried to hurt me [I'd last a little longer in a zombie apocolypse we've decided].

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think he kind of is sort of a "protector" type figure...obviously not of the player, of course.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-12 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE. And also, he would make quite a strong guardian

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he's clearly a guy you want on your side.

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason, I find this story charming, and actually a little comforting, myself. ♥

[identity profile] atelierlune.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret made me wonder who would win in a fight: Pyramid Head or Slenderman?

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
When you mentioned a certain slender man I thought you were talking about Marble Hornets on Youtube.

[identity profile] pelespen.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
+1. I'm just now getting into horror fiction, though - anyone wanna link me w/whatever is the correct reference, please?

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
This may help you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slender_man

(Anonymous) 2011-06-12 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
What? They are. Marble Hornets is about slenderman. Or am I misunderstanding this post somehow :/

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently there is fiction based on Slenderman. This was something I wasn't aware of until the anon in the comments above pointed it out.

[identity profile] doktordeathray.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That's remarkably cute.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh if you play the game (which you should!) - especially if you play more than once - the game somewhat validates those feelings. Because you're so isolated and alone in the game, and PH is one of the very few characters you see, he's not entirely unwelcome when you see him just because he's a recognisable humanoid figure in a nightmarish realm of twisted polygons. plus there's all the theories about how PH is partially a guiding figure for James, trying to force him to confront himself rather than kill him (e.g knocking him into a new area off the roof rather than outright stabbing him).

so yeah, that works if you overanalyse a bit!

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This is completely adorable. Congrats, OP!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-13 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Because of Silent Hill, I'm not so afraid of the dark :) don't ask how that works. I had a problem with Slendy too, it made me afraid to go outside, but it doesn't sound as bad as yours...I got rid of it by ignoring Slendy stuff for a while.

Glad your mind is feeling better, anon. I hope the mental boo-boo is doing well! (and I agree with the poster above--mental health before mental Silent Hill =P)

[identity profile] lupineradiance.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's oddly adorable, OP.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever works, OP. PH is awesome in multiple ways and SH figures like him are open to a lot of interpretation.

[identity profile] cherryfission.livejournal.com 2011-06-14 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay, OP. I've seen Slendy lurking around in my yard, too.

I just tell myself that he's protecting me and my little brother from the Rake.
