One Piece isn't a comedy, it's a battle series with comedic elements

(Anonymous) 2011-06-12 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm... if we're talking about the anime, I kind of feel that One Piece is one of those anime series that tries to stretch out 15 minutes of material into 22 minutes in order to fill up more episodes. I can understand the boring-ness because it's so slow-paced. I haven't watched the anime more than about 20 episodes because that kind of slowness all throughout is kind of painful for me.

I don't think One Piece is really meant to be a comedy.

Also, I like it but think that it's too long and does get pretty darn boring from time to time. Definitely don't expect it to be everyone's cup of tea, regardless of how much they may like pirate stories.

Also there's little to no actual piracy being carried out by the pirates.

ONE PIECE SECRET! ♥ ♥ ♥

...Sorry, I'm one of the fanatics, I'm afraid. But yeah, it's not a comedy, more of an epic adventure with comedic and absurd elements. If you feel you can bear it, most OP fans will give up if you tell them you've read to the end of the Alabasta arc without being moved by it. Though if you read with the expectation that you're going to hate it, anything will be bad, just saying.

IAWTS.
I tried both the anime (only 20 episodes) and the manga (over 100 chapters), and though the manga wasn't as boring as the anime it still wasn't as good as people say, I got bored and gave up.

I made the mistake of saying so on my LJ and several people defriended me after that D:

I don't watch the anime, but I've hear it said that it only gets good around Arlong Park. Honestly, if you have to watch 100 episodes of a show before it gets good, it's probably not worth it.

I honestly think the manga was at it's peak during the Baroque Works saga, which starts around chapter 100. I liked it from the beginning, but I started reading it 7 years ago when my tastes were much less refined. I still think it's way better than other shonen battle manga, but I'm not about to argue that that makes it any good.

I tried reading One Piece. It bored me too. I'm sure it has sane fans, but a lot of the fanbase terrifies me, for looking down on anyone who dislikes it, much less if they prefer Naruto or Bleach. For the record, I don't really care for any of them, but I found what I read of the other two a bit more interesting.

It ain't a comedy. It's a pirate battle series with a couple of fantasy elements and comedic elements. And the art's fun to look at. And it can get pretty dramatic too.

It interests me more than other shonen series like Naruto or Bleach. Granted, I still stopped reading all of the above AND One Piece but I only stopped reading One Piece because I lost my place. Naruto got kinda weird and boring for me and Bleach was... strange and I didn't like it.

The problem with One Piece is that the anime is unwatchably slow and the manga doesn't get good until vol.15 or so. And even then it's not the golden messiah of manga that fans make it seem. Surprisingly well written for a fighting shounen though.

[identity profile] wolfiemon.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm yeah.

I really wanted to get into this series since I'm always looking for something that will make me laugh. But some reason it didn't do it for me? I dunno, I assumed that it was a comedy, but I found it really isn't. It's really more of an action battle show than anything. I mostly found it too slow.

I really like the character designs though.

This makes me sad but I understand it's not for everyone.

Though hopefully you've tried the manga and not the anime because while I enjoy the anime it just fails to show how good Oda's story is. If however you've tried the manga and still couldn't get into it then I hope you can find a pirate story that works for you.

Eeeesh sorry about the people force-feeding you the squee. That effect is why I have never watched Fullmetal Alchemist. I do love One Piece myself, and it is a series I will recommend people to try, but I won't ram it down the throats of anyone who's already found out it doesn't grab them.

It's as bad as saying to someone "oh, I really love series X" and then getting a rant in return about why X is a piece of shit--err, not pointing at you, OP, just remembering a conversation with a friend who gave me an earful about why he disliked a show I enjoyed. (Then turned around to go on and on about what he liked that he knew I was not interested in... lol)

There's only so much monotoned "uh-huh" you can muster in response to a wall of squee or a wall of hate before it drives you up the wall.

Yes, exactly. It's like when I tell you I don't care, that's the part where you shut up about One Piece and talk about something we can have mutual squee over. Why is this so hard?

[identity profile] tonko-ni.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Mutual, shared squeeing is the best part of fandom! Or, actually, that essentially is fandom, really. But yeah.

[identity profile] deciphre.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean, there.
I couldn't get into it after getting through about 200 chapters.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-13 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
That you started reading (hopefully not watching) One Piece believing it would be a pirate comedy series might have been a problem there. But everyone can't like everything. Not even when the greatness of some things far surpasses that of the hip flask.

Seems you have sucky friends. If I were you, I'd just keep repeating "I don't really like One Piece" whenever they try to squee at you. That's what I'm doing when my friends want me to squee with them over Doctor Who, and they're slowly starting to accept that no, I don't like their timey wimey show.
