Not the OP but...for many people, yes. Don't forget, many old-school fandom people actually appreciate having a "wall" between them and the people they obsess over and having a little bit of plausible deniability out of respect for the real people involved. Those of us who feel that way (at the very least) roll our eyes at the fans who make the rest of us look bad and mockable by acting as if it's perfectly OK to, say, give a copy of their slash fic to the actors or something.

Even beyond that - there are also many of us who have to worry about professional reputations and possibly even getting fired depending on what kind of work we do, potential safety issues when dealing with internet material of a sexual nature simply because a bunch of other people are lying about their ages, bigoted communities we're stuck living in, family and friends who won't understand, etc. So, yeah, I for one would much rather not have to worry about being "exposed" as a slash fan because some people think it's just something fun to lightly tease fans about, without realizing that fandom is a "safe" place for many people in large part because of the anonymity it allows.

I wonder if it has something to do with a completely different attitude toward online privacy between the generations.

I mean, the Usenet/Mail List gen tend to use the net for anonymousity from the real world, while the Facebook/Tumblr/Tweet gen tend to use the net for extra connection as an extension to the real world.

Just a thought.

Not the above Anon,but:

I don't think it has a lot to do with that.
I'm part of the Facebook/Tumblr/Tweet gen but I still not want non-fandom people to know what I do 'in Fandom'. I think it's more of a personal thing.
I also think that the "Supernatural" Fandom played a big part in this, due to it's rather enormous size it includes dozens of downright crazy, rude and inappropriate people. Even though they're a bad example for fandom,I think they might gave more people the courage to be more vocal about that gay porn they write etc.,especially with actors encouraging it.
Plus, quite a few fandom members write school/college/whatever essays about Fandom in general and SLash. Both things have also gotten media coverage...I'm guessing this makes some people go like "This is so cool,I have to show I'm part of it" and makes all of us feel more accepted, like it's not strange and we should be poud about our fannish obsessions and like people will understand our enthusism so we want to share.
