I think your dismissal of the "women would get hurt" thing is kind of misguided. For all that women hockey players are tough and skilled and generally awesome, you can't just ignore the physiological differences between men and women when it comes to a high-impact sport like hockey. Look at height difference alone: only one woman on the current Team Canada roster is even 6', while there are many NHL teams with only one or two guys shorter than that, and many players are 6'3" and over. Yeah, there are some smaller guys like Nathan Gerbe and Marty St. Louis, but they make up a tiny fraction of all the players, and they are very much the exception that proves the rule. That's not even getting into the difference in muscle structure and bone structure and all the other little bits and pieces that add up to make guys in general a lot more capable of both hitting hard and surviving hard hits.

You say the game is too violent as it is, but unless you completely removed checking, there would never be more than a scant handful of women physically capable of playing in the NHL. If you do want to remove checking...then I suggest you find another sport to like, because that's never going to happen. The sport has changed over time, but for every advance in safety (helmets, padding, rule changes) there's been equal advances in things like the game speed, the players' size, hits, etc. It balances itself out.

Even if women were allowed to play in the NHL, it would take a very forward-thinking owner and GM to draft or sign a female hockey player, given that they'd have to deal with things like locker room rules, players not being comfortable with a woman being part of their team (which would happen, whether it should or not), opposing players not being happy about playing against a woman, plus all the backlash from fans (either sexist jerks or people with legitimate concerns about safety). I suspect most owners and GMs would consider it as an option but eventually decide that the risk outweighed the benefits.

So: women in the NHL, not very likely.

What would be awesome would be if women's hockey could get more widespread recognition from hockey fans. It's a great sport to watch and I'd definitely love to see more of it outside of the Olympics (and Worlds, but they aren't as widely watched anyway). I think a lot of people who prefer European-style hockey (more playmaking, less scrums in corners) would probably enjoy watching women's hockey if it were available. Obviously in the current day and age it's not going to get the same size fanbase as men's hockey, but I really hope that someday soon I can turn on a TV and catch a women's hockey game without it being the Olympics. (And, yes, blah blah sponsorship, ice availability, broadcasting rights, etc. all get in the way, but if hockey can get broadcast in FLORIDA than I'm sure someone can figure out how to get women's hockey on TV in Canada.)

I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ON THIS SUBJECT.

tl;dr "women's hockey is great but the people who say that they'd be too likely to get hurt in co-ed hockey have a point; everyone should watch more women's hockey anyway"

assume that all the above "women" and "men" are referring to cisgendered people, as physiology is key in this discussion

Personally I've always been annoyed that womens' ice hockey does not allow checking. It's girls hitting other girls, so what is the problem? But IA with the overall point that you're making.

Indeed. Seconded!
